Does IP timing affect engine shake?

My engine tends to shake more than I think it should. I have the dampener spring adjusted and it's the new type. Valves are adjusted. New mounts and shocks. Plenty of ITUs and highway driving with grades. New injector nozzles. Still shakes. Not enough to worry about, but enough to annoy me. The only thing I haven't really done yet is IP timing, and I'm wondering if this will affect the shake. My engine runs strong, 0-60 around 13 or so (haven't _really_ timed it) 26-27 MPG, so I don't think it could be that far off.

I've searched the forum and found the injection timing threads, but just wondering what I'm going to improve by drip timing the engine. Will it smooth out the idle or is injection timing more of a performance issue?

Original post notes that I have new shocks and mounts, and that I haven't yet set the IP timing... 84 300SD has all that built in - no add-on required.

Have you checked compression, you could have one low cylinder?

IP timing will have no effect on the shake........

I've had to readjust my new RD bolt a time or two.

greasyv 08-22-2009 09:41 PM

This might be too simple but I had a shaking problem at idle, at first not too bad then after the car warmed up it seemed to shake more. I lifted the hood and noticed bubbles in my primary filter. Replaced the fuel line leading up to the primary filter (the clear inline filter) and cleared the problem right up. The fuel line was old and cracked right under the hose clamp.
Hope this helps.

This guy had low compression on some Cylinders apparently due to sticky Rings. This is how he helped his situation.

I have this too. New RD has made no help. New rebuilt/balanced injectors, all the other changes do nothing.

Car starts, runs beautifully, great MPG, plenty of power.

Very temperature dependent. VERY intermittent even then...

Adjusting injection pump timing without setting cam timing
The above is from Hunters post. I believe the Valve timing if late enough could cause shaking.

And then there is this long thread:

My TC offset is not even two degrees of "stretch", so I cannot believe that it is causing much.

AND, it is totally intermittent. Sometimes smooth as glass, sometimes the car has a pulsating shaking feeling.

I would probably correlate it with the cigar hose pulsation rate at idle... Never done so rigorously, but it is awfully consistent.

I just bought the drip tube. Someday Ill drip time my IP. Im way behind, my 82 has been sitting, window down in the garage because I wanted to repair the rear window regulator back in August, and only got halfway... Too busy since.

Want to get my car back out on the road (though with winter salt, the garage is a good place...).

i'd do another valve adjustment; when i first got my 300SD it would shake bad at idle when warm. it got better after each valve adjustment and now is almost totally gone. i even did an adjustment with a warm engine (using warm engine specs), that really improved the idle. i found that most intake valves were tight even after 100 miles. you might even want to do a cold engine valve adj. and leave the valves a little loose (use the warm specs: .40 on exhaust and .15 intake i believe but double check)
