early ford F350.
good luck getting one that hasn't completely rusted out....
I see a lot of carnival guys...
maybe if you make a basket, you can ask for one as a prize (I'm sorta being serious)

my stepdad still has one on his farm, in IL
last time I drove it (late 2004, early 2005) it had a smidge over 600k on it
(actually, up to about 5 F series right now)

I'd look for an old fleet truck. There are many auction houses that you can buy them from. I'd actually look for a 99.5 and up. Why Dually? They have a better turbo then the 96 OBS trucks and have an electric fuel pump over a mechanical one. The biggest problems with the Fords is they you a quick connect clip on the fuel system and they have a tendency to let air into the the fuel wearing out the injectors. Most truck need some injector work by about 150k from aerated fuel.

Dodge, early 12V FTW. Even though I own a Ford PSD, I'd say Dodge. At your asking price point, good luck finding what you're looking for.

But in that price range, if you want it to be driveable on the highway, you are talking about something in the early 90s.

Of course, SOMETIMES, there are deals to be had out there......granted, since I bought my 2000 Dodge 2500 Cummins, I've rebuilt the transmission, installed new PCM, new crankshaft position sensor, and camshaft position sensor. None of that worked, so I then replaced the ECM which solved my issue --- well documented over at:
http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/911-urgent-situations/102602-p0320-p1389-p0720-2000-dodge-2500-a.html

Good Luck in finding what you want.

no voters for the GM fiasco eh?
I like my 6.2 3/4ton truck, but I got LUCKY with a new motor from the city... traded it for an extra car trailer I had sitting around... 0-60 in 12 seconds with a decent amount of crap in the bed, I have no idea of top speed, scared to go much above 100 in it... it's a truck after all... had no problems pulling a HEAVY trailer with a SD on it up mountains...
but if you get one, plan on pulling the VC's (which means all the injector lines have to come off MAJOR PIA...) and replacing all the rocker arm retainers... plastic sucks!
should easily find one in the 2K range... but if you can find a DODGE, I'd get it in a heartbeat...

General consensus of the Ford owners is to stay with the 7.3 PSD. The 6.ohno, either was very good, or very bad (more bads than good from what I've read). The later models, 99 and up, seem to be pretty good too.
I personally own a 99, F-350 dually, crew cab with 179K miles.
