Is there a brake light gasket?

After being a good forum citizen, and doing a full search on this, and not finding an answer to my question, I now want to ask,

Is there such a thing as a brake light gasket? I saw one previous post where someone mentioned it, but I'd never noticed one (not that I ever paid attention to it), and there's no remnants of one ever being there.

I'm getting water in the trunk, and short of crawling in the trunk (no, I don't want to do that), I'm guessing that's where the water is coming in, as I have water inside the brake light assembly area. It could be leaking in from the trunk gasket, but I doubt it. There's an easy to see gap on the outside of the car once the trunk is open, where it looks like water can get in.

Is there a brake light gasket seal?

There should be a gasket on the taillight assembly, sealing it to the body. Otherwise water would pour into the trunk through the taillights. Remove the taillights, and look on the backside of them for a gasket around the perimeter. Otherwise, you could climb into the trunk and have someone spray down the trunk, looking for where water is leaking through.

Right, the gasket is part of the plastic lens assembly. It may be separably replaceable (I've never looked) or you could use body putty or any one of a million sealers. Try to avoid silicone-based sealers, they make future paint application (if any) difficult.

It sounds like its the gasket but it also can leak through "micro cracks' in the lens itself. I needed both a gasket and new lens to cure my H2O issue

Water in the trunk could be entering from around the brake light assembly; yes, there is a rubber gasket that seals the space between the body and the rear light assembly.

Your post is just a bit confusing as you say you have water "inside the brake light assembly area." If you mean inside the rear light assembly, then the only way water would be there is through a crack or hole in the lense.

My 190E has a crack in the lens. Checked for gasket problems, and does not leak there. When I find time I will replace the lens.

You can tell if the lens lets water in, spray a high pressure hose into the tail light with trunk closed (of course) and check for condensation/water drops inside the lens. In my case the water goes into the footwell area. Luckily it only gets wet when I go to the car wash over here, so that's not much of a problem.

The dealer should have the right gasket for you. See if P/N A 124 826 00 91 ("seal ring") works for you. Also double check with your dealer if other side is the same P/N.

Yes, I took the brake light assembly off from inside the trunk, and there's water on the light bulbs, etc.
