Valve job

Is 3 years too long to do a valve adjustment? I was a quart low on lube oil so I open the filler cap and put a quart in. Only thing is the car was running while I did it. You would think if the valves needed adjusting the oil might shoot out like a gieser.........

So, how do I know if it needs one or not?
