Best price Mobil-1 5W-40?

It's time for the annual servicing of the '96 E300D so I'm looking for who has the best price on Mobil-1 5W-40 synthetic oil. Anyone bought any lately? None of the usual suspects are having Mobil-1 sales.

Jeremy

A few weeks ago I bought some at Advance Auto Parts and they had a deal going.

For five quarts and a filter it was $30.

I just had to buy another quart or two.

The deal was actually for a Mobil 1 filter but they didn't have one for my car.

The clerk let my buy a Purolator filter and still gave me the deal.

Regular retail was $7.99 a quart IIRC.

Yup, the cheapest I've found it is $22 for the gallon jugs at walmart if they have them.

I try to never go to Walmart, but when I have they never have M1 Turbo Diesel. The cheapest I find now (since the price went up about a year or so ago, used to be $5.79/QT) is at the Tractor/Farm supply for $6.79/QT. The price hike caused me to switch to Rotella Blue Bottle for $20/gal from Autozone.

If you are buying at Wal-Mart or your name brand auto retailers, you should be using 0W-40 for your 96 E300. It's the European car formula that meets the MB diesel standards. The one the dealerships uses (at least by me) is Mobil 1 5W-40 European Car Formula. But the 5W's at the retailers is either a different blend than what the dealerships get or the labeling is specially made for the dealerships. Because what the dealerships sells is not sold in in the stores. (at least the labeling is different, because the 5W in the stores does not specify "European car Formula"). Personally I think either blend is fine, but if yoy want to get what meets the standards of our cars, get the 0W-40. (I know... the never ending debate. Many threads on this).

In any case, Wally World does not have 0W-40 or 5W-40. The local auto parts stores have 5W-40 "Turbodiesel Truck" (which is in the engine now) for $7 a quart. Mobil's web site lists 0W-40 as the correct one for the '96 E300D so I will continue to search for it.

exactly. I used to use that "turbodiesel truck" one too.. (it came in the big jugs). Like I said, I'm sure it's fine, but the 0w-40 is the only one that has the MB specs on the back. Since wally world stopped stocking those blends, I just get the 0w-40 at AutoZone or pepboys now. 7 bucks here too.

x2, some wally worlds seem to always have them, while others don't stock the M1 turbo diesel. It's hit and miss. I hate setting foot in that horrid store, but it's usually the best place to find Mobil 1 5w40.

Lately though, I've been using Shell Rotella T 5w40. Carries all the same CI-4, CI-4 plus, CJ-4 diesel ratings as Mobil 1, it's also a full synthetic. Costs a bit less than M1 too and readily available at Autozone.

There is one Walmart near me that always seems to have it for $22, I bought two gallons this morning.

I have also used Shell Rotella T 5w40, but it is my understanding that it is actually a Group III "synthetic" if that makes any difference to you.

Yes, Rotella is a Group III oil. Some of the UOA guys on TDIClub have noticed a sudden increase in wear when using this oil, they have speculated that the formulation has changed.

I use Mobil 1 in all my cars, and my friend's powerstroke when I change the oil for him. That thing holds 15 quarts of oil
