half of the front left spring was laying on the road this morning, part of coil 2/3 down broke from the -23 with wind?


any tips before i jump in?, gona be cold want it to go nice and fast lol

Springs sometimes give out due to fatigue.
There is a few DIYs on removing the Front Spring. If you want to do it fast I would rent one of the Spring Compressors designed for the job from our tool Rental program.

The Cheap Spring Compressors designed for Struts or Gas cars are not strong enough for the Front springs and I know because I tried it.

There is one DIY on making a Spring Compressor.
I think what you are going to be able to do is going to depend on of you have another Car to drive during the time you get the stuff you need together.

Also it os most common to replace Both Springs in the Front when one goes bad so that one side will not be higher than the other. However, I have never tried replacing only one.
May be some one in your area has a parts Car and would sell a single used one.

Always replace springs in pairs, they do settle with age.

I actually replaced the front driverside spring in my 85 td this weekend. I highly recommend renting the spring compression tool. My Dan and I made a compression tool out of two metal plates and a large bolt. It didn't work so well. We spent about 8 hours trying to do it that way, because the spring kept shifting around on our homade tool. It even busted loose a couple of times. We actuall had to use two crowbars and a hamer to get the stupid thing to pop into place. That spring has to be almost completely compressed to get it to fit into place easily. So from my experience I have learned that you can do it with a cheap or a home made tool, but it turns into a big hassel. Why go through all that trouble when job can be done in about an hour if you have the propper compression tool. The next time I replace a spring, I will definately rent or purchase the tool.

ya i spent about 4 hours messing wiht a home made one, couldnt get the spring compressed enough

Unfortunately the Front Springs are way stronger than you would expect. Most likely due to the Diesel Engine being heavier that a Gas Engine.

You Local Autoparts store is unlikely to have one. In the Pic below is what it looks like.
The diameter of the Threaded Rods on the Generic Spring Compressors is too thin to be safe to use.
