is this a good idea

i wonder why the air intake hose on my 79 300sd goes behind the left light housing. isn't this gonna restrict air somehow? and is it a good idea to reroute it lets say uder the car so the air would be pushed in when driving..? any opinions appreciated

I'm sure that there is adequate air flow in that area. The main thing they were doing by putting it there was to get cool outside air that is forced into that area, rather than hot underhood air.

Fabricating a ram air for a diesel is wasted effort unless the injection system is built and calibrated to take advantage of the additional air. In a gas engine if you get more air through the intake, more fuel is drawn or injected in the correct proportion. When you increase the amount of air which actually makes it into the engine, you increase power, assuming that it properly draws or injects the correct amount of additional gasoline.

In a diesel, it's a different situation entirely. You can cram more air into the engine 'til your red in the face, but the power is determined by the amount of fuel injected into the engine. That said, there have been many people over the years do things to the injection system to increase the amount of fuel injected in order to increase power, and it works. It also takes that engine to a very early grave.

I suggest that if you want to soup up an engine for more power, you do it with a gas engine. If you start messing around with the balance of air versus fuel in a diesel, you can easily cause drastically shortened engine life.

Have a great day,

Yep!

Gonna have to agree with Larry on this one. A diesel engine "messes" with it's OWN air to fuel mixture constantly. It will gulp air all it wants. The reason a turbo makes such a difference (in a nutshell) is because it ALSO increases fuel flow at the same time. ( they talk to each other you know..the turbo and the injection pump. They speak "clatternese") Anyways, the only placement change I would make is if your air intake is getting water in it from?????who knows maybe fording a stream that is to deep? Flooded roads in the spring, whatever. I have often thought about putting a "snorkel" on my Rabbit to get it higher. Then I realized that when you get in water up to the door handles, the rear end comes off the road anyway so what's the use? I would think that by being behind the headlight assembly it would give it a little protection from the elements as well as giving it "fresh" air to breathe.

What Larry said is correct. Only when you start adding more fuel would more air help, it helps keep the EGT down.
