Confused on glow plug upgrade / 1978 240D

Folks,

I'm upgrading my glow plugs from the loop type to the pencil type. I have the instructions in front of me and I think I understand what goes where, but I am not sure what method to use to connect the red and black wires coming off the glow timer included in the kit. Should I connect them at the ignition switch (and if so, how?) or should I connect them to the ports on the plug that attached to the old relay under the driver's kick plate (if so, do I solder them)? It seems many folks have been able to do this upgrade with minimum difficulty, but I have to admit I'm kind of stuck here.

Andrew
