LOL... If you have the valve being pressed down when you want to ' undo ' it.. that I think is a problem.... of course the nice route it to take out the precombustion chambers... they need cleaning once per decade anyway... and just look at the piston top to be safe...
I am not sure if perhaps there is some overlap of the valves and the TDC position... so that needs to be checked before we send the op down the garden path...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leak-down_tester

NOTE WARNING :
" An engine pressurized to 100psi must be locked at exactly top dead center or it will rotate under the pressure. This presents a serious DANGER to the operator. Using less pressure is less dangerous and opens the possibility to test at positions other than top dead center.

Due to the simple construction, many mechanics build their own testers and those instruments function perfectly well."

All these agree that 100 lbs is plenty... some suggest less can even be effective...

This guy did not like the HF tester:

WELL some NEW findings tht lead to ask for opinions!

I just put the injectors back in blead the lines, changed the oil and fired it up! Need to balance the injectors as soon as I get my pop tester built!

The smoke diminished, but no smells more like fuel then oil! Called VSTECH_________He otld me to take the cover off and check the cam marks! I JUST LOVE OJT____BENZ-WRENCHIN' 101!

Pulled the valve cover off again...lined up the cam marks and the balancer says about 10* degrees BTDC??? NOT sure if the guy that put the lower together did it wrong or some kind of a tweak setting??? Smoke could be from firing BTDC and IP timing????

The only thing is I do not know what he might have done! I know that when I get it up top___spin the balancer to around 11* the cam washer is past the CAM TOWER mark a little over 1/8"____I think that the chain is off a TOOTH!

ANY THOUGHTS

Please ignoe some of my typos!

I just put the injectors back in blead the lines, changed the oil and fired it up! Need to balance the injectors as soon as I get my pop tester built!

The smoke diminished, but NOW smells more like fuel then oil (faint odor of oil-BUT if its firing with the valves open/BLOWBY?)!

Called VSTECH_________He told me to take the cover off and check the cam marks!

You need to check the relationship of IP to cam to crank..
and you need to use the 2mm valve movement to do that correctly..
cam tower notch is specified by FSM only as general initial engine build check... a ball park kind of thing... lots of threads in archives..
