Unfortunately my car is not back together. In fact it is currently going through a (very long) complete restoration. My project progress can be seen here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshuajeeper/collections/72157623002122199/

It started out with just a blown motor in my daily driver to me deciding to take this opportunity to fix all the "band-aids" that I have been working on to .... well....
It was taking so long until this point because since May of last year I have been commuting 200 miles round trip a day to work (Mercedes dealer in San Rafael, CA), but now I have my own shop up near home. So hopefully I will be able to get more work done on it.

And you are very welcome. I'm glad to have helped.

If I woke up some morning with my dash in that condition I would just burn the car ' in situ'... I am too old to start something like that... or more important ...to FINISH IT....

Just came in from looking for the OVP Relay again. With the glove box out and kick panel off, I cannot locate the relay. I checked in every cranny of that space and it's not there.

What next to fix my tach? No tach amp, and no OVP Relay? I'm pretty sure this isn't a California model based on some photos I saw of the air intakes.

Thanks for any assistance.

The tach is dead. I was following some troubleshooting steps from another post.

I am going to take another close look at the tach pickup to make sure the magnet is still on there. I finally spotted the magnet that is on the (fly?)wheel.

If you can take it apart..
you might just try replacing and electrolytic capacitors and resistors that you can get to..
I don't know if it has a printed circuit board or not...
it may have the overload protection inside it...and might even looked burned....
might be simpler than you imagine to fix it...

As has been stated above, I don't think you have an '85 style OVP.

I believe only '85 w123's had the extra electrical stuff in the passenger kick panel. Yours is '84 so I would start looking else where.

Are you sure the tach amp was originally not there, or was just removed? Got any photos of the area where it should be?

The tach pick up is on the harmonic balancer in front. It's a gray cord, 0.5cm wide approximately, and runs up to the back of the glow plug relay area where it should plug into the tach sender.

This thread has a photo of where the tach amp is on most w123's My car has only the diagnostic plug.

Do you need to remove a bunch of stuff to take the tach pickup out? I haven't gotten my hands in there to see how much clearance there is.

The reason I am looking for an OVP relay is that my car does not have a tach amp. I was instructed to take a look at the OVP relay but I cannot locate it. Is it possible to not have a tach amp and OVP relay on a w123 1984 300TD?

Thanks.
I had the same problem with my 84 Ca. 300D. Tach not working. OVP is under right kickpanel. OVP has a red top. After pulling relay off base you'll see a red 10 amp fuse inside red cap, readially accessible. Hope yours is in the same place.
