Farming out injector pop-test... what to ask -

I just pulled the injectors off the 300SDL - cleaned them all off with wire brush and plan on installing new shields. Was going to get them tested by a local diesel shop... there is a guy that lives close to me that has a diesel performance shop - is there something specific I should ask him other than to test the pop pressure and spray pattern on all 6.

The injectors markings are as follows:
BOSCH GERMANY 651
060 KCA 30 S 44 435bar (Edit: it's 135 bar)

"Pressure" Bar figure will tell him everything he needs to know

IF,He Knows what he's doing.

(A Bosch Trained Professional will have access to all the info he needs.)
(All you need to do is ask him for a pressure [Pop] test,He'll know to check
the spray pattern as a part of the test.)

And what should a reasonable cost be for such a test ($30-50)?

"Testing" takes about 45 seconds per injector. Cleaning and balancing will take a lot longer, if needed. There is no way to predict what will be needed.

Sure it's not 135 bar?

You're right... looked at it wrong - it is 135bar.

Should I be soaking them in something - say gasoline while I'm getting the testing arranged?

How long have your injectors been in service?

The PO had no record of service maintenance on them so it's hard to tell for sure... but the heat shields I pulled out where shiny and looking brand new... the injectors themselves were filthy and coated with grime - but they cleaned up real nice just with a wirebrush and a lot of elbow grease.

Heat Shields are "One Time Use Only"

The Torque necessary to seal the Pre-Chamber/Injector interface distorts them.

At that milage (if the working tips of the nozzles aren't absolutely perfect) I'd be getting in touch with member Sean C. Watts about a set of New Monark Nozzles [He'll pop test and balance them for a nominal fee].You send him the Injectors and he sends them back with New Nozzles installed and balanced.

The Monarks are superior to even the original Bosch equipment.

That's kind of a long term plan - but that's nearly a $250 expense that I'm not sure I wanna make unless it's absolutely necessary. This is why I pulled them out and am wanting to get them checked by a qualified shop locally first... if they tell me they are still pretty decent then I was going to put them back in and be done with it.

... not sure what you mean 'at that mileage' - it's not even 130K on the clock

How do your nozzles look on the business end? Is there significant erosion around the pintle? New nozzles are perfectly flat.

Hmmm... if you mean that the pintle is perfectly flat with the bottom end of the injector, then no, mine are not perfect... I'd guess the needle protrudes about 1 millimeter ouf of the body - just a guess though. I've got a dial indicator, but not sure how I could measure that protrusion using it... When my camera's battery is recharged I'll try to take a closeup photo of it... but I dont have a warm and fuzzy feeling about it now...

No. I meant the face of the nozzle, exclusive of the pintle, should be flat. Erosion usually leaves a concave area in the area not covered by the heat shield. Which is not to say that an eroded nozzle can't generate a good spray pattern.

If your nozzles are significantly eroded, it might suggest that they are original and almost certainly good candidates for replacement. Even if only one or two nozzles exhibit poor patterns, replacing them all with new Monarks might be a preferable alternative.

In that case: no, I do not see anything like that on them... but I think I'm going to at least let 'C Sean' test them out and balance them for me.

I think I've really messed up...

Last week I decided to send my injectors to the member of this forum to get them clean/balanced... I packed them up nicely and asked my wife to mail it for me to the address on the front of the package... unfortunately I wasn't specific enough... she mailed it via US Postal Service - normal delivery with no tracking or insurance of any kind..... they said that the package would be arriving at the destination on Monday 5/10 but it's now 5/13 and they still have not showed up... it's a real nail biter - I'm not a patient man so I'm not dealing with this really well.

I guess worst case I'll need to buy whole new (possibly inferior) Bosch injectors for a while - at a much bigger expense. Praying that somehow they will show up eventually

Patience my friend!

It is possible for the USPS to actually deliver things all in one piece to the address on the package . . . most of the time!

So were they light enough to send first class? If she sent them Parcel Post then it will be a week to two!

Priority has been known to take over a week!
