616 broken camshaft 240D manual

hi folks working parallel on my third MB 240D manual. I got it with a broken camshaft. missing first half of camshaft / broken valve cover
Found some post relating to different camshafts possible .
I will have some pictures of the damage to post with this.

engine # 616 011 28 01
rear camshaft bearing # 617 051 12 12 SECOND / third bearing size 49 MM
rear 1/2 of camshaft # 616 10
head # 616 016 7?? 4?? 0?? 4 ??

The engine is out of the car . It turns over by hand as long as you keep the chain tight.
Did a leak down test and all cylinders are the same . No hissing sound out of exhaust or inlet. Some air escaping past cylinders but all same flow for all 4 cylinders.

I operated all valves by hand to let air escape and see if they would close again. All do. May be valves / pistons are OK.

Here is the question. There are 2 older ( 78 /79 ??) 240 in the scrapyard.
Could that camshaft / bearing tower be compatible?

Thanks Johan

A 78/79 cam will not work in your "later" car. Look for a "later' doner car, 81-83, (not sure of the exact transition year) to snag a cam from. A few years ago I got cam, followers and towers at the bone yard for $100.

About the same break as mine

I originally blamed the failure of my 240D on the fact that the previous owner failed to put three of the four headbolts in the very front of the head. But that was not the real cause. The real cause was the failed vacuum pump which dumped steel trash down the chain gallery, jamming up on the crankshaft sprocket and it almost made trash out of that just overhauled engine. Check that vacuum pump!

Yes I will sure check the vacuum pump and also drop the oil pan to look for debris and missing or "added" parts.

I will check the local junk yard and see what engine numbers they have. May be I will be lucky.
Did any body else do a leak down test to determine valve issues after a broken camshaft?

Thks for the help

Does anyone know the bearing dimensions of the "stronger" camshafts? what would be the part number
It would be nice to know that before i go to the junk yard.

Thks J

As the motor is out, its not a big job to pull the head.
Better than finding the problem later.

Thanks Johan

I have a Mercedes Factory Exchange Engine 240D sitting in a car here with 36,000 miles on it.
Being as you are so far away I'll let you have it for free....if you help me pull it.
I have a full service shop with lifts.

If you bring 4 wheels with tires you could flat tow it home.

Could be pricey on fuel though...I-40 E Route.....1,425 mi (22 hours 38 min ) Each way.

hi Dkveuro,

Wow that is a sweet offer.

I always love a nice road trip adventure, where are you located?
Would gladly help pull the engine.
What is wrong with the car, is it a manual?
I have never heard my broken engine run so have no clue about the compression and would not want to get in a complete overhaul at this moment.

please let me know your time frame?

yes you are right better do it right the first time... but....I have no clue about the compression and bearings. The odo is at 280000. The engine looks clean on the outside except for the front crankshaft seal area.
I am nervous about getting sucked in deeper and deeper. If I open it up then I might as well pull the pistons and check rings and such and when I do that I might as well ,... .. I am sure this engine would like to be overhauled. I am not willing to go the whole way with it yet.
I will see if I can pull the pre-chamber and insert a bore-scope to see something.
The one I have has no camera mount so I would not be able to share my findings.

Sorry if my quote thing doesn't work out, first time I tried.

Later J

ZIP 73080. 123 Chassis..4 Speed. Chassis rotted out. Interior ruined.
I have the receipt from the P O who bought the engine through Mercedes.

I have had the car here for two years. I kept it because of the 4 Speed primarily, but no one wanted it.

So, it is fitted with a flywheel and clutch. Car will sit here until someone needs the engine or transmission locally as most folk will not pay the shipping
and my time to pull it and put it on a pallet..I'm guestimating around $400.00 total would do it, but I need to check with BEAVER TRANSPORT first.

It would cost you less to ship it than a round trip in fuel and hotel charges.

BUT.....before I would do anything, I would like to run the engine again to make sure it is a sound motor. We drove it home from where I bought it ....sounded fine then but that was two years ago.

.
Interesting , I bough a 4 speed tranny to put behind a OM617 but then later got a 240D manual and we are happy enough with the power to not go through the conversion, used to drive a citroen 2cv4 with 32 HP and that was fun to. Less HP makes you more aware of traffic. I think everyone should drive a low HP stick car for the first couple of years just to get familiar with the experience of momentum and inertia.
Let me know if your engine is still running good. Coming in person could be fun anyhow. We run WVO and camp, it would become a family adventure with an extra.

Later, J

Any takers??, I don't have a shop manual . the remaining bearing are 49 MM
I found the correct engine block number # 616 912 10 13 70 26 if that would help.

Thank you, J

It's likely to stay here for the time being.....unless everybody reading this now rushes my shop to get it !!!

It will be a few days before I start it though...have a lot of work to complete for other customers.

BTW...Where did you get that 85 Lada Niva diesel ? I saw lots of those and other diesel Lada, UAZ and Kamaz trucks while in Russia.

Nice, not many people here know about NIVA's
It is still in the Netherlands,( I am Dutch). It is one of the couple of NIVA prototypes that had an official conversion with a 1.9 diesel from peugeot. I really like the design because it is made to be repaired on the road. End of this year i will import it as an antique in the USA. It is awd ( central differential with lockup) the transfer case is divorced.

How long were you in Russia? fun or work?
