Squeeling noise from left rear???

1983 300D Turbodiesel - Automatic - ~220,000 miles

Today, while the engine was running at idle and the car was parked, a loud shrieking noise was heard from somewhere in the left (USA drivers side) rear of the car. It almost sounded like it was IN the trunk.

It's my understanding that there is just one fuel pump, and it's on the engine itself.

I've heard this 2-3 other times, lasting just a few seconds, over the last 2 years. Today was the loudest and longest lasting, at about 15 seconds perhaps. It immediately stopped when I had moved the car...

Any ideas would be most appreciated. I'm trying to get this car tip-top. :-D

BTW - I suspect that my motor mounts are totally gone and perhaps this noise, erratically varying in pitch, may be a weird vibration being transmitted through the drive shaft or even car body, and is causing the noise in the rear left wheel or suspension??? Just my guess but perhaps this has been seen, or at least heard, before. ;-)

BTW - I had all the rubber changed in the rear trailing arms a year ago. This strange noise happened before and after the trailing arms were replaced/refurbished.

What else is in the left rear of the car that can make a noise anyway?

Since it stopped when the car was moved, I'm still guessing engine vibration related stuff, but I don't know much about the driveshaft / differential / etc.

Very odd. Something loose on the muffler rubbing against something bad? If it was a TD there are other possibilities but with a sedan in park thats probably as good as it gets.

Exhaust rubbing or do you have a squirrel stuck in the trunk?

I was thinking a cat.

I happen to have had a cat get trapped in my basement. It somehow crawled somewhere into my sub-flooring and entombed itself there. The smell of dead cat reeked for about a year in part of my house. Evey now and then, especially when it's humid, I still get a slight whiff of that poor pussy.

Poor fella, only his little paw tracks remained.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...true story though.

Sounds like exhaust to me.

It turns out it WAS a cat in the trunk. I gave it water and food, closed it back up and found that horrible noise consequently went away. Thanks so much.

:-)
