240D Air Intake Modifications

Hi, my W114 240D has some issues with the air intake which I am looking at fixing at the moment.

Whilst searching for filters I cam across this :--

http://www.wade************************/diesel.html

About half way down the page is an air intake upgrade for my engine. Has anyone ever done anything like this or know of any reason why not to?.
At the moment I can get hold of anyone from wadeperformanceproducts so it may be a case of building my own system with some help.

Regards

Brett

It will make a little more noise. You will think it goes better.
If you want to give your car some hurry up you need 5 cylinders or maybe a aftermarket turbo.

I wasn't really looking for more speed, its a 4 Cylinder 240D I kind of resigned myself to leisurely drives. I was more a case of the existing air filter system in massive and in a bad way without filter so I though I would review it before fixing it and seeing if there was an alternative.

$120 isn't bad for a kit, I've never read a review of one, if you buy one I'd be interested to hear real results. All forums says cold air intakes are junk but most people have never actually used one.

my story-

I bought one of those "stage 2" intake kits off ebay and installed it on my 83 300D. It was from wade performance products.
It immediately sounded great, turbo whine is a siren song.

Then I took it on a 1500 mile trip, 500 miles in, the oil separator deal that they sent me, which consisted of PVC pipe glued over some wire mesh and some other foamy stuff, clogged up and stopped movement. This ended up blowing out the valve cover gasket, and I ended up with a leak of nearly a quart of oil every 100 miles.

If you were to do that, id avoid that red oil separator that they provide, and use an oem option. Better yet is not to pay them for something you could make yourself for about 30 dollars in parts from the home depot.

I like mine, quicker reponse (617.951),better mpg's.I added extra foam cover in summer dusty areas.
I used a dodge Ram intake reduced, reason the one you see is where heat is.Mines right in cold air flow behind grille.I buy mine used at flea markets $5.

The original set up is going to be your best option.
Let us know if we can help.

I clean my wire mesh screen with diesel fuel and change the oil about once a year in my oil bath air filter.

When I had a 115 240D I thought about getting a set up like that. if i recall correctly the air filter was an oil style air filter. I remember it being a pain in the a$$. I don't think I changed... I sold the car shortly after to get the Ponton in my sig.

I really miss that car. I would get the stock setup working correctly.
If it is an oil type filter maybe change it out for a CA spec 85 300D-T filter. its a paper filter that sits on the fender just like the stock 240D setup.

I don't remember exactly what the stock set up looks like as its been years.

Post some pics

as far as performance goes. I got a sick pleasure out of holding up traffic. I think the 240Ds are special in their own ways. If you want performance, get a 123 300D or if you really want performance you have to sell your soul and buy a gas powered car

That air cleaner looks different then the one on my engine. I think you have the paper element filter. when I gave my car a turn up the auto parts store sold me a paper element, but it would not work on my 240D they must have had 2 different filter setups.

The air filter housing does seem to be a bit different, it had the marking BDU-1981 on it but I cant find any reference to this anywhere.

More investigation is needed.
