Yes, throw the "service" lever under the hood to disable the 4matic clutches. In my old 4matic it didn't have the power to drift on pavement with the 4matic engaged, but would do a pretty good job in snow and ice (although far less predictable than a real AWD system).
For real drifting, reference some good racing footage such as the "Rally of 1000 Lakes" race back when Group B existed, to see some great high-horsepower AWD drifting with UR Quattro Sport, Metro, Lancia, Ford RS2000 et al. I can attest to how much fun it is to drift a quattro with the loud-pedal matted, pavement or not didn't really matter much it was the fastest way around a corner in those cars to get it pointed and get all four tires pulling. An amazing feeling.
