Thx for the advice.
I found the link on ebay for the pistons. http://tinyurl.com/22p4vlc It looks like prothe sells a lot of german parts. VW, BMW and Benz. I guess I will have to purchase the pistons first so that the guy at the machine shop can bore the cylinders to match the piston size. |

You weren't kidding. That engine is about the size of a benz.
That could power a freight train. |

Reuse your "Old " pistons if no defects
Peter,
There's no reason to get oversized pistons IF your originals are still good. Re-Sleve-ing a 240 D engine is a easy task for a machine shop. (Even if the 4 banger were not sleved from the Factory and had to be bored out for the sleves.)

compress ignite,
Do you know if the original 240d engines were built with sleeves? I've seen prices ranging from $12 to $40 for sleeves. The seller "prothe" is selling them for $12 on ebay. |

To the best of my knowledge both the OM616 and OM617 engines were built with liners - someone please correct me if I'm wrong

If they were built with liners, do you know if the process to install a new sleeve, means boring out the old sleeve and installing the new sleeve?
Or, would the new sleeve attach to the original liner/sleeve? |

Out with the old and in with the new. Size the new ones after installation to fit the pistons used. Liners have to be pressed out and pressed in.

615, 616 and 617 all had dry liners....
Process to replace is draw up liner using a extractor press, from the top. Press in new liners using bench-press of 10 ton capacity. 'Deck' the block, as the new liners have a lip on the upper end that locates in a similar annulus of the block, but are made approx 15 thou higher for 'decking' puropses.... Machine a 45 degree 'radius' at the very top of the new liners to ease fitting of the piston-rings. Clean the entire block and oilways, rebuild with new rings at the very least or better still, pistons and rings complete.

Alastair, that for the info. I will share this with the machine shop.
I doubt I will get the pistons but I won't know for sure until I pull the head. BTW, beautiful 300td. They are hard to find in the North east USA without tons of rust. |
