Why Different Amounts of Air in Primary Fuel Filters?

I suppose the only downside to owning two (almost) identical cars is that I notice every difference, so I start wondering...

In one car (91 300D), the amount of air in the primary fuel filter is negligible....maybe a half inch if the filter were turned vertically.

In the other car (92 300D), I would say the amount of air is about 1/3 the volume of the filter.

Both cars fun flawlessly.

Why the difference in the size of the air pockets?

I guess this is how I amuse myself when both cars are working perfectly!

What was the fuel tank level in each vehicle at the time of the observation?

I don't have an answer but I've noticed the same thing on a 93 300D. When I change filters the air bubble is different. I just attributed it to different brands of filters although I don't know why it would be different.

Does it matter? Does it change?

Curious...

Mine always has a small bubble in it and it is always around the same size. I'm so anal about it that I mark the side of the filter with a sharpie (along with the date and mileage), so I can see if the bubble size ever changes... But it never does in mine.

Mine had about half

Mine was about half air and it was throbbing at idle. I back blew the fuel hose and it stays completely full now.
