Replacing pads might turn into replace calipers, rotors, and pads. oye

Hello,

Am I in need of new rear rotors and rear calipers for my beast (1991 300D)? Last night I began the process of replacing my rear pads. After removing the calipers I noted that only the outside pad was worn, the inside pad had not been worn, and the rotor had only been worn on the outside. Can I get away with just replacing the retaining pins/spring clip and turning the rotors? Thanks!

I had the same problem on my 300td and I just decided to replace all of it, it was obvious that the rear brake were doing very little. I'm not sure if the calipers were frozen or not, it seems unlikely that both of them would go at the same time but they looked original and the parts were cheap. It stops much better now. I noticed yesterday that the front pads are wearing very unevenly also, the inside pads on both sides are almost gone while the outsides are like new.

If it's a floating caliper design, the caliper must slide freely on the pins, if it does not, only the pads on the piston side will wear. Do whatever it needs to free up- clean it lube it move it around.

If its a design w/ pistons on both sides, a piston on the unworn side may be cocked and jammed within it's bore. Maybe you can free it up w/ a brake spoon or clamp, maybe you can't. A torn bellows seal can allow water into the cylinder and corrosion can follow.

The worn side may be dragging- the cylinders of some brakes contain a rubber ring that pulls the piston back into the bore when unloaded. Replacing this is more than I've done.

If it looks like you can get down to a good surface on your rotor and stay in thickness spec, NAPA should have a regional machine shop they'll ship it to.
