W124 300D Speedometer/Odometer Question

My speedo and odometer stopped working yesterday.

I have 270,810 miles on the beast.

Could something other than the cluster be to blame?

My trip odometer hasn't worked since I bought it about 18 mos. ago.

I was watching the speedo as it fell to zero.

It happened right after a sustained period of over 3K rpm on an on-ramp.

A split second after the speedo needle fell to zero something bounced up under my car.

It could have been debris from the road but is there anything that could have broken/fallen off associated with the failure of the speedometer/odometer?

Yeah, the speedo cable from the cluster to the transmission could have broke. One time I took the cluster out and just felt the bit of this drive cable with my hand while driving, if it turns then the cable is fine.

Check the speedometer cable

Check both connection ends of the speedometer cable. It could also be in the transmission or the instrument cluster.

Well, I am having serious issues with the tranny.

I am currently in the market for a replacement.

I suspected that it could be because of the condition of my transmission but.

I think the transmission is original....
