85 SD...airbag in steering wheel?

Does the 85 SD have an airbag in the steering wheel?

Thumbs up

It was optional here in the US in '85 and possibly '84, but do not quote me on the '84. I have seen it in '84 Euro cars.

In Europe it was optional since late 1980. It was available on the W123 as well!

FSM has it either way. Mine doesn't have it. What are you trying to do?

I was considering an aftermarket wheel. If it has an airbag I will forget that idea. Guess I'll have to look.

Easy way to tell: Non airbag wheels have a hard plastic mercedes logo in the middle. Airbag wheels will either say SRS or RS on them.

Also, if the car is DOT spec there will be a huge honkin knee bolster in place of the normal dash trim.

Dual airbags:

I don't remember seeing a "knee bolster" in an 85.

I love my knee bolster! That's where I put my cell phone, a pen and apiece of popcicle stick that holds my sunroof open. I didn't know non airbag dashes didn't have that, and now I wish I had dual bags.

If the 85 is DOT spec and has an airbag it has a knee bolster. I've seen them. Euro cars don't have knee bolsters as the euro standards figured people would use their seatbelt.

The knee bolster is the part of the dash which "catches" your legs if you aren't wearing a seatbelt. It's padded and somewhat collapsible. Hence the "Passive Restraint System".. the driver doesn't have to do anything to activate it. My 92 Jetta has "Passive Restraints" too, the shoulder belt is attached to the driver's door, and the large knee bar sits below the dashboard. Supposedly you don't have to buckle the lap belt.

Here's a snippit from the FSM showing the passenger side airbag and knee bolster.

Nifty. I have dual air-bags but thought it was all the same except with non-passenger there was just a glove box and thus the lock box MIA. I did not know the little cubby-shelve-thingys were MIA too.

Just felt like chiming in on this one. A knee bolster is a great assett if it truely is impact absorbing as it's meant to prevent damage to the femoral arteries in your legs via broken bones. It's somewhat common for someone to badly fracture their femur and subsequently puncture or tear their femoral artery which can cause you to bleed to death faster than most EMT's will be able to respond or transport you to the hospital.

Fact.
