123 axel replace need answer to question about 8mm bolt
here i am sitting at my dads shop... my cars on the rack and im waiting 15 minutes for the silcon to set up on the cover of the diff...
axles came out easy and in easy..i dident replace the seals for two reasons... one i had the wrong ones and i need to be out of the shop tonight and second...they wernt leaking... ok so heres the question.... i got m8 with crush washers... the bolts that came with the remanufacuterd axels have little longer 8m bolts with a (looks like) standerd washer and a little longer spacer... when putting them in it never snugged up against the wheel bearing housing a hair of play... when i took them off the first time to do the job they were tight... so... i improvised... used the orignial bolt and spacer with the new washer... tightend it up (it sundk the washer in) and torked it to 22 ft olbs... or 30 nm... so what do you think... did i do the right thing.. or what... open for sugestions and comments... better go finish putting it all togelther... all telll you if it blows up or anything... and my acess have been driven for 5,000 miles with bad axels... on side close to tthe diff is now ornge in color... ha lucky

you used silicone on the diff cover?
none of the diffs I've taken apart have any sealant on them, I have reassembled clean. no leaks. I think you did the right thing with the bolts. if there is play, the axle would beat itself to death and wear the hub, and bearing I'd think. |

When I installed my Rebuilt Rear Axles I missplaced the new Bolts and such that your are speaking of that came with the Axles.
I just reused my old ones with Loctite on the bolt threads and that was about 2-1/2 years ago with no issues. (And, after the job was done of course I found those bolt kits.) The good thing is they are easy to get at so you do not have to hold up your job and if you want you can replace them later. I do not remember what type of sealant I used when I put the Differential Cover back on but I know for sure I did not put it on Dry. I do not want to do any job more than ounce.
