Someone should call a MB dealerand check how many starters were offered.
I tested a forum member's 300D starter with my photo tach and it was 180 rpm. Mine is defintely on the slow side. Does MB have a spec for starter rpm?

Yes because the two you are talking about will work either way and the cali model starter is the only starter you can use on a cali model......well maybe a 300SE or 300E starter....think they are smaller but might bolt up.

I'm not disputing that either will work. But I did swap out the original light duty in the 77 300d with a heavy duty later turbo version to get it turning faster in cold weather. The new starter did turn faster. The OE had about 50k miles on it when I swapped it out.

Well, at 50K it shouldn't have been worn out.

A 240d stick one is supposed to be different than an automatic somehow--so does thos mean a turboo deezl stick conversion can use the TD 5 cyl auto starter with a long happy life?

I looked at ********, and see that for the 240d the part number for a reman bosch is sr61x, and for a 300d it is sr70x.
They do list the power output on some starters but not the bosch, and the range for the 240d is from 2.2 kw to 2.7 kw depending on brand of starter. The Beck/Arnley was the highest at 2.7 No end to the confusion it appears.....

Pulled the starter from my 4 spd 240D and its p/n is 0 001 362 047
Spun it up and measured a no load rpm of 8900
