ATE says they are heat shields. The W123 Chassis Manual says they are heat shields.

Exactly.

New to the forum, greetings.

I would have thought the complaint on this thread would be the omission of the gallery seals (between the two halves of the caliper). This appears consistent with Bendix and ATE calipers (as well as rebuild kits for calipers on other cars I owned).

I also have a bit of a gripe about the mixed bag and inconsistency in quality of pistons these kits sometimes come with. One kit I bought had chrome plated pistons with a decent (but not great) surface, the other was stainless (Bendix I believe it was) which had fairly horrible surface quality and I took the lot to a metal shop to be buffed to a very high quality mirror polish. This is of course added cost on top of the kit, but preserves the seals the best. It's my opinion all stainless pistons need buffing and many plated pistons may also need a good rub.

If anyone has found a way to subvert the seemingly deliberate omission of the gallery seal in the rebuild kits, do tell.

So, why do rebuilt calipers come stripped down, so to speak? And why can't you buy just the stamped metal part alone. What if you just put the rebuilt calipers on your car without the heat shield?

someone suggested that the temp will not get high enough here in the states and that they were, (perhaps) designed for faster roads, more abrupt stops...

perhaps the photo's of rebuilds are inaccurate, perhaps they do have the heat shield pressed into the piston.

will find out soon enough

I did order the rebuild kits so as to have that metal part. will keep the rubber parts on a shelf for some other day.

tango could tell you this, but in the FSM, Mercedes does not allow for splitting of the calipers. I got a smack down for suggesting it. So I modified my post in keeping with MB service practices in this thread.

As far as the pistons are concerned, the re-seal kit I've come across for the w115/w116/w123/w126 etc only comes with the rubber parts and shields. No pistons. Your question might be related to another vehicle.
