is there a difference between the 240D and 300D rear hubs?

Today I pulled off my bundts on the 300 and put them in storage, then moved the 4 steel rims with snow tires on them to the 300 from my 240. Bolted it all up, went to move the car, and bam! won't move more than 8 inches.

Thought maybe I had a long lug sneaking around, so I went around and verified every single lug bolt on the car between the 240D and 300D, and they are all the same length, all 40 lug bolts, plus another 10 in the trunk of the 300D.

After scratching my head for a minute, jacked up the car, and on both rear rims backed out the lugs about 1/4 inch, and viola! the turn normally.

I don't see any physical difference between the hubs, but something is different, since I was switching back and forth between bundts and steels on the 240 with the same lugs. Could it be a different parking brake hardware? Maybe something aftermarket is larger than OEM and hits the lugs? Its perplexing.

Im going to grind 10 down 1/4 inch so I can get on the road. Anyone else encounter this type of problem?

The hubs are the same. However you must use the correct lugs with the correct wheels. Bundts use longer lug bolts, steel wheels use shorter lug bolts.

thats whats odd about this, I was using the exact same lug bolt on the 240 for both the steel wheels and the bundts, which I bought with the steel wheels on it, and the parking brake was functional. What are the measurements of the two types?

Are you sure you didn't get them confused? The W123 hubs are the same..

Bundt lugs are longer and have a smooth roundish face. Steel wheel lugs are about 1/4 shorter and have a small indent in the face(some may have a MB star in the indent).

they were all the same for both cars. My confusion comes from that!

this clears it all up, they were all bundt lugs, on both cars with the rounded end. Whatever oddness there was is on the 240, which is now a parts car, so I can relax knowing there is not some issue I need to resolve with the parking brake on the 300D.

Time to grind them down for the rear

Someone probably did something to the rear parking brakes on the 240D. Have you ever taken a look at them?

Never pulled the rear rotors, but now I might have a look. I do know that the parking brake is functional on that car, it worked perfectly while in service.

It certainly is convenient to not have to screw around with two different lug lengths if the only interference reason is the parking brake. I might move whatever makes the bundt lugs work on the 240 to the 300

I'm probably being too fussy but I'd go and buy some new ones for steel wheels instead. You'll notice a difference between the feel of new and old wheel bolts...

Army and your suggestions are both excellent, but the situation called for instantaneous resolution.

I quite literally was sitting in the car with it all packed up ready to leave, put it in gear, and 8 inches later, my trip was halted.

I took ten, taped them off, nipped off the ends with a cut off wheel, then ground a bevel on the edge, then cleaned up the threads a little with a small file. After that, they all threaded in just like stock, took about 15 minutes all said and done and I was able to get on the road.

The 240D came with steel wheels, and aluminum wheels that resemble the steel wheels.

In the above post showing the 2 types of lug bolts, it say`s #1 is for the light alloy wheels.

would this mean the 240D alloy, or the bundt wheels?

#1 looks like the same one`s for the Bundts.

I have a set of the alloys for the 240 i want to install, and wondered if the bolts for the steel wheels would be the same.

the picture looks like it could be for the 240D.

well DUHHH, I have a 240, maybe I should just go look in my owners manual .

I did not know this and i have a set of new snow tires on 240D rims that I got from my PO. Now I know I need the short bolts.

Thank you... hooray for random forum reading!
