IP R&R ?
I'm going to look at a 85 300sd that wont start, the owner claims the mechanic said it needs a fuel pump. glow plugs were checked
I have a 83 300sd sitting in my driveway that ran without oil. engine is seized. Could the IP on that still be good? I assume they are the same. I've never fooled with an IP before, whats involved with removing and installing an IP? how long will it take? and how does an IP go bad anyway? |

I'd be a little worried. some of these IP's are fed off of the engine oil Circuit and they can seize up, I'd have it tested if possible. You can try it, but I'd be hesitant to.
Ips go bad, springs break, Racks seize up.. there's a lot of precision engineering in one of these things.

How to remove and install the IP is somewhere below:
DIY Repair Links http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php?f=82 http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/DoItYourSelf On the Fuel Injection Pumps of the years the original poster mentions the Oil goes from the Engine through a plastic tube and in through the side of the Fuel Injection pump. The Oil goes out through 2 holes in front of the Fuel Injection Pump. The Drain holes are higher than the Camshaft of the Fuel injection Pump so there is always a pool of Oil inside of the Fuel Injection Pump that never drains out. This means that if you completely loss your Oil Pressure your Fuel Injection Pump would still have Oil inside to lube it. Meaning that your Engine will be ruined but not your Fuel Injection Pump. When the present owner of the car said he was told it needed a new Fuel Pump that could mean the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump on the side of the Fuel Injection Pump or the Fuel Injection Pump itself. Or simply that someone did a bad trouble shooting job and the Fuel Tank Screen is clogged or it needs Filters. It could be that the Fuel is contaminated and quickly Plugs up new Filters so the mechanic is thinking it is the Fuel Pump because he just changed the Filters. Or maybe they do not know how to bleed the Air From the System. Loosen the Fuel Injection Line Nuts at the Injectors; Crank the Engine and see if Fuel comes out from under the Loose Fuel Injection Line Nuts.

ip swap
I too had an 85 and swapped an 83 engine..IP was slightly different. IP in 85 had an electronic control component on the back end - i think to control idle speed. Pretty evident if you look.

It make little sense to replace the injection pump if only the fuel pump is bad.

there is a separate "fuel" pump , besides the IP ?

In the attached pic below is a Fuel Injection Pump with a Blue Arrow pointing at the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump.
The Red Arrow is pointing at the Hand Primer Pump (that is attached to the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump).

And thats the GOOD late model one with the slim black knob instead of the leaky one that looks like an upside down hat(white).

Yes. The lift pump (where the hand pump is).

In which case the seller may be equally unaware of what the actual problem is.

well , " the mechanic said fuel pump " , if it was in fact the hand pump, its a pretty cheap and quick fix. but for someone to sell a car because its too expensive to fix the "fuel pump " I have to assume its the IP.

The hand pump, the fuel pump and the IP are three different concepts.

Buyer beware on a non runner. Usually requires astute judgement of the current owner.
Certainly it may be as he suggests. Yet he is off the hook so to speak as he is parroting what he claims the mechanic quoted. If there was a mechanic. Very easy to become cynical on used car sellers. Certainly it can be something simple with a good engine and automatic for example. |
