Question OM617 grafted into 240d

It's on eVilBay. My question is: I thought you couldn't mate a four-speed from a 240d to an OM617????

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1983-MERCEDES-BENZ-240-300D-TURBO-DIESEL-4-SP-EURO-SPEC-/120685884060?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item1c1970729c

Cheers

A two tone 123. One of the better looking ones I've seen. Though it usually doesn't turn out well.

People mate the 4 speeds to 617s all the time. It's one of the common things people want to do to their turbo 617s.

It bolts right up. The correct 300d flywheels are scarce as hens teeth since they were never offered in the us with sticks. the 240 fw works but is not ideal.

If you decide to to it there are balancing issues with the flywheels in 123 chassis cars and some are balanced with the flywheels, run a search about balancing flywheels to cranks.

There is a lot out there on it. (here).

Yeah this is actually a remarkably common swap. Seller is either oblivious or desperate in calling it extremely rare. I do like the 2 tone paint, it looks nice! Something seems off about the headlights, and the hood does not line up well.

It looks clean with out the side bump strip, and the 2 tone looks pretty good as well.

Yeah that car is rear... but not as rare as my 126 4 speed.

to bad custom "rare" cars like this (and mine) does not translate into more money... it normally means someone messed with the whole car, thus there could be a problem around any corner... this makes the car worth less. Personally I never plan to sell my car... good luck to this guy

Well I don't think the swap hurts the value of that vehicle at all. I think it really helps it. I think there are a couple of things that will make this a no sale. First of all, the seller has a reserve on it. Reserves never help the sale. Number two is the statement with no clarification that it is/was 98% rust free. If that is his opinion he should back it up with facts and pictures. Where was that 2% by his estimate, of rust. His 2 % might well equal our "heck of a rust cover up"! Let us see it and we'll make our own determination. The car looks nice, but I will take the standard paint and trim any day. He indicates a top speed of 90 mph which would indicate he left the 240D rear axle/ratio in it. Good for great performance, poor mileage and a boring noise on the highway. Not difficult to address and change however. I hope to have mine on the road this spring or early summer. Same swap, 617 turbo into a 240D ,in a very beautiful high mileage car.

They are, they are, really million mile cars. It is only a problem when you want one to go that far!

I have often thought about taking off that side trim. that looks pretty good. Not so sure about the tutone paint job.

I notice the clock has the silver button in the center and the spedo has the black. but it does have the 100mph spedo. and I think that year does have it.

The rear seats and the drivers, need the padding strips (for tucknroll) pulled back into position and hot glued in place. Not all that hard to do. I just did our rear seat, looks like new.

That one picture showing the passenger side floor carpet. what is that in the corner on the right side? some of that expanding foam?

Iam also thinking he might still have the 3:69 diff from the 240D. I get 28mpg + on the highway with our 240. I would think, one more cylinder, and screaming along with that low gear, will drop the milage.

I can get 29 to 31+ on the highway in our 300D 4-spd with the 2:88 diff.

So Euro spec is changing out the headlights, and a 4 spd?

it might be a pretty car. they say pictures don`t lie, they show everything if You are in front of the camera. but pictures of a car can be decieving.

Charlie makes a great point, what is going on with that right passenger floor board corner? The first and only car I purchased on fleaBay was a 73 220D. It was advertised as rust free. The driver's floor board was rusted through from outside front corner to inside front corner, under the accelerator pedal. Most of the hole is wide enough to stick your hand through.

While this car is cheap enough now, no telling what the reserve is, and the seller may have dreams of thousands more. I would not touch it unless the carpets were out and photos of the floors were available.

Is that the trim they call "pinkamino" ? And it sure does look like expanding foam coming from under the floor mat of the right rear seat. It is too bad he has it listed with a reserve. I think it really slows the bidding down a lot and rarely do I see a reserve being met. It is rare. And I wouldn't spend a dime of expense to go look at a car on Ebay with a reserve.

Well, the seller says it has a 3:69 rear axle ratio. If they put that in, in place of the 3:88, they didn't gain much. Would still keep it's top speed under 100mph.

the 369 is normal for a 240d of that era. You may be getting it a little mixed up with the 288 which is in the 85 300d's.
