87 300td to buy or not...

Ok, I have the chance to buy a 87 300TD.

200k miles, #14 head. Guys willing to drive it 2 hours to me for the sale. original faded paint, standard issues (bad vac pods etc) whole car for 1600 bucks. It does have the 3rd row seating.

Worth it? I'm still on the fence. I have my 87 300d and like it, I guess I could use the 300D as a parts car for the 300TD (as it's my understanding the 300td is a more valued car) Plus I could use the 3rd row seating...

If there is any rust no. If not it is probably fair. Do you have the money and or skill to put a new head on it if needed? Owning the sedan I assume you know most of the issues with the 124. A couple things the wagon has the sedan doesn't. Do the SLS and self latching tailgate work?

not sure. have not seen the car in person yet. It's 2 hours away from me and I'm just trying to get a feel for what I should be looking for and then what it's worth depending on condition issues.

Well, if it's able to drive 2 hours to you, that's a good sign. $1600 isn't very much money...

If he is driving to meet you that far It's probably a decent runner. Any past docs or reciepts would help. That is a decent price if things are in order. Many parts will swap out of your sedan or other gasser wagons from wrecking yards.

If running well you should go from 0-60 in about 12-13 seconds

Some things to look out for:
-A/C operation
-Sunroof
-Rust (expensive or VERY time consuming)
- Rear hatch lift pumps
- Power antenna (specific to wagon)
- Leaks in rear hydo shocks (very expensive)
- look down into fuel tank neck - all scaley rust? I needed a new "used" fuel tank. or it can get re-coated
-too Many holes in exhaust/muffler

Good luck! With time, money, money, money, and love it can be a great car. Save it from being parted out!!

Never, ever, ever agree to buy something this old, at any agreed to price sight unseen. Is my best advice to you.

That would be .5 of a second quicker than my 300 ETD's literature states mine will do (8.5 sec.)

I'm not so sure about that 87 TD, unless it is geared that low?

I believe the sedan did 0-55 in 8.5 seconds. The wagon is just a bit slower.

They just forgot the turbo and the intercooler that they put in the car you drive.

Not sure what type of stop watch you are using and where some of you keep coming up with your trap speeds. Maybe you have a highly modified injection pump, exhaust, and turbo? Technical specs show the wagon at 11.9 sec for 100km/hr....or 62 MPH. That is one second slower than the sedan. That of course is in perfect brand new condition.

I think my 12-13 sec estimate for a well broken-in motor is pretty close

be sure and post it's location and condition if you look it over and decide you don't want it.
be sure and go look at it before you decide either way!

I do too.

I don't know where some come up with wild accelleration claims similar to a 2005 E320 CDI. . . . ?

Oh I agree, I have been going back and forth with the guy for a week now. I buy a lot of cars... pain in the ass cars... I have this damn affection toward older rovers... so I'm fairly use to seeing large piles of crap for sale.

One of the things that does worry me is the fact he's selling it as the engine only. He has a running video of it up on youtube. If he's willing to drive it to me it shows the trans works.. but he's a scraper and that also tells me that everyone else has already given up on this car.

I'm only interested in this car due to it's 7 passenger seating. I'm trying to figure out the way I want to go because I would rebuild my current sedan, which runs and drives just fine but needs a lot of little things, or buy this and redo it which would most likely mean the parting out of the sedan as a donor.

It's my understanding that the 300TD is worth more as a finished car than the 300D, mainly due to its original production numbers and the scarcity of existing examples left. So I guess it would be the way to go...

If I pass on it, I'll share all the information on it so someone else here has the chance at it.
