There are 2 drains in my head!
I've been told my head is often in the gutter - but that's not what I mean. There are two drains in my head.
See the attached photo - the supply comes from 5 holes that are under the cam shaft towers. These are the little rings that are sticking up from the surface of the head. Counting from the front of the engine number 2 ring in this picture is missing. The drains are effectively two large gutters. Oil pours down the front of the engine over the timing chain - and at the back of the engine there is a much smaller hole that goes down into the block (and presumably into the upper oil pan). The other holes that you see in the picture are for the head bolts. On the underside there are 3 main regions where the coolant flows - between cylinders 5 and 4, between cylinders 2 and 3 and one nearer the front. The part number for the connecting rings - on the oil supply side - is 180 055 01 75 for my normally aspirated OM617 (1981 vintage) If you want to see the underside of the head - and the oblong drain at the back of the engine, take a look at post #28 in this thread:- http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=276144&page=2 Yet another EDIT:- The diagram in post 2 of this thread provided by jt20 shows an older version of a OM617 - well I think it is an older version - as the oil pump is chain driven from the crank. The oil pump on my engine is driven from a shaft that comes off of the timing device. The flow of oil in that diagram is slightly different from the way in which it seems to flow on my engine.
