Expansion Tank Cap Replacement Interval

Does anyone, from experience, have a sense of how often the expansion tank cap ought to be replaced? Mine looks to be in good shape. But, as I'm trying to figure out why my coolant level is dropping and as it's been seven years and 85,000 miles since it was last replaced, am I overdue?

I don't think there is really a time limit on these sorts of things - to test your coolant system properly you need to do a pressure test. However to just check the cap I'd wrap some bog roll / toilet roll / loo roll round the cap and see if it gets wet.

My rule of thumb is every 6-8 years.

I have never heard of that before !!
It sounds like a good idea. Must try it some time.

My original cap lasted 19 years. The aftermarket replacement cap lasted about two years.

Wow. What happened at the two year mark? Visible disintegration? Was it OEM aftermarket?

Mine was leaking. There are these big brass washers (shims) on the underside of the cap looking into the cap. Mine were cracked, hairline and hard to see. I'd only change a cap if it was faulty, which mine was. I got mine from Phil. I think it is a 130C cap.
