? about the 60x motors

I had this guy tell me that the 601, 602, 603 motors are junk and the 617 are the best ever. He asked me if I saw a 601, 602, 603 motor with 1 million miles? He said that he has only seen a 617 with 1 million miles. My question is, has anyone ever seen or have 1 million miles on there 60x motor? This guy was making me mad! I know that the 60x motors are not junk. So lets hear it guys, have you?

There are damn few OM 61X engines with a million, and when you consider the number of them produced it is a tiny fraction of the total.

Considerably less OM 60X family engines have been produced so it is likely that the actual number rather than a percentage of a total will exist.

I personally own two driver OM603's with over 370K and a OM602 that just turn 375K the 602 has never had the head off and has the original transmission. The 603's both had their cylinder heads replaced but only because I wanted to, the original heads where both fine, I've got a couple other 603 engines all with 250K with original cylinder heads.

I think you'll more likely find high milage OM60X engines in europe as there where just more in shear numbers put on the road there, statisticly it is more likely that a number of the "anti-lemon" very good engines are to be found there.

I think there is at least one forum member with a 500K+ OM603 but I can't recall who that is off the top of my head.

My 603 had well over 350k on it when I lost the car...
It was totally original except for timing chains!

Is your "friend " a member here?
Its unlikely that any one on here would be st##id enough to make claims like that!!
Next your "friend" will be telling you that a 61X will run for ever on WVO & peanut shells!
Has he shown you this 617 with 1m miles? I have one with 800k on it & probably it would have gone to 1m but I got another.
I cant see any good reason why a 60X would not do 1m miles. Problem is that those of us that could have run one that far were too busy running our 617 till they wore out & didnt start soon enough on a 60X.
Best You tell your "friend" that he is dreaming & if he keeps it up, he will go blind !!

The guy probably was trolling on E-Bay, and inhaled some of that bragging and other crap slung around over there. If enough people say it, and enough read it, after while it is carved in stone.

sure there is the Taxi from Grease that did the million miles or what ever. so people base these diesels on that. did go through several engine rebuilds.

What I have seen at the PNP`s, most are 175k to 275k and some into 300k. did see one 240D with over 400k.
most are there from neglect and abuse. rusted out, and accident damage. or PNP picks them up from the whole sale yard. have seen stickers on the windows " This vehicle doesn`t meet Federal Government buyers guide lines".

The potential is there for any vehicle to go the distance with maintenance, and an owner willing to put up with owning an old car. with our throw away society mentality, most things are junked.

Even if an eng/car went to the million mile mark, ever seen a Speedometer that will last long enough to record it?

My MB might be "Bullet Proof", but I sure have found some chinks in it`s Armor.

I don't get the point of a million mile motor discussion. It obviously depends on how well the engine has been maintained.

I hazard a guess there is no stock engine in any make of any vehicle that has done 1 million miles (on earth) without maintenance.

Space travel is another thing.

Thumbs up

A member here had about 441k on his SDL, before he passed away. Car ran great. Head had been off twice, bottom end was stock.

Far less 60Xs were built, so chances of seeing an extreme high mile one is going to be few and far between.

No one is saying "w/o any mechanical maintenance"

But there is a whole family of Cummins engines originally designed to carry 100,000 + lbs of steel long distances, then it became more cost-efficient, fuel wise, to ship by rail.

So the Cummins engines are over designed for the work they ACTUALY do, versus what they are theoretically capable of doing.

And yes, they require maintenance like every other engine.

But they do last because they were not cheapened like GM engines.
