It'll actually cruise well above "78 MPH efortlessly."
These (the '98s and '99s) are high-performance turbodiesels. Unfortunately, they were not designed for optimal highway miles per gallon. Purely performance cars that also maintain a slight margin of somewhat exceptional mpg, versus many of their contemporaries. "78 MPH" is NOTHING to the '98 and up turbodiesels. Achieving 100+ mph comes easily and very quickly to them! The 2005 E320 CDI ungoverned, will cruise effortlessly at 140 mph round-the-clock. As demonstrated on a test track in Laredo, Texas 5 or so years ago. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 12-17-2010 at 04:45 PM. |

I used to own a 96 and i used to average 28-30 mpg around town. I got 500 miles on a tank of diesel driving in the city so to say. I never used the AC because it didnt work and did not have any lights to work, just a few stop sings. I drive it with care going 25-35 mph. If you do actually city driving with traffic and lights i do not think you can get 28mpg.

I have a couple of 95 E300's that can get 35 miles per gallon day in and day out. Expect to have to put a new head gasket on the duel overhead cam engine (non turbo) around 250k miles. Pretty straightforward job.
I'll keep all this info in mind when I look for my next E class.

Max speed of the E300TD is about 135mph, before the limiter comes on. Confirmed by me. It doesn't take long to get there.
I wouldn't worry about the spring perches. If they go, its a relatively inexpensive repair job. I'd be more worried about a rusty body, since that's what'll cost money to fix. The electronics aren't a big concern, I have a silly issue where when hot my engine idles too fast (turning the interior fan up full seems to slow it down for some reason) but apart from that it all works ok. I'd have the turbo over the non turbo any day, but then again I refuse to own a car that does 0-60 in more than 10 seconds. |

I drive with a very light foot, steady speeds, and have a Scanguage installed at all times and I must have been lucky to get a rare car. That is exactly what appeals to me about these cars. There really is nothing else at this price point that has as much substance as these cars yet still pulls down respectable mpg's.
