Most 2.47s are. Early W116 ones are not.

I have to disagree. They are rare in 1st gen w126 mounting style.

That one is probably a 224 gear ratio.

Based on my experience with my 83 300d na with 307 diff and five speed overdrive (about equal to 2.47 ratio) I would estimate the fuel economy would improve from 3 to 5 mpg but top speed will remain the same as with the lower gear.

My car will do 35 mpg at 70 mph and its top speed is 100 mph in fourth or fifth gear.

I want one! What did it come out of? I've been thinking I'd eventually like taller gears for the freeway anyway and getting posi as a bonus would just be sweet.

Not much point to posi if you can't put enough torque to the ground to spin the wheels! 2.47 is very tall for only 180ft/lb torque. Even the cat choked 500 had 280ft/lb.

I'd be far more interested in a 3.07 or 3.46 with an air locker.

Yeah, I can see wanting a shorter gear for performance. It would be cool to have a 617 spin the tires. It would be one of the very few that did.

In reading all the final drive posts, the consensus is that a 2.88 is as tall as you can go to get better economy. the 2.47 only provides a quieter ride....apparently the fuel econ improvement to final drive relationship is asymptotic and ends at 2.88

I'd like a locker option on my 3.07, then I could really have some fun in the snow! It holds its own with my mega snow tires (I've been experimenting lately, and it doesn't even come close to getting stuck)....but with locking diff....the possibilities!

I live in northwest Oregon. I only see dry pavement 4 months a year and my wheels spin just fine on the rain soaked stuff I live with most of the time. Plus, the engine may get a little wilder in the future. I've done quite a bit of reading in those old threads about variable turbos and intercoolers.

2.88 would be even better, but can one separate the gears from the locker? I haven't had one of these diff's apart yet, but if it can be done, I'm not scared to try. Wouldn't be the first differential I've been inside... and yes, they do work afterward. I'm planning to tear into the suspension this spring which would make it an easy time to do a diff swap.

Marvelicious, this thread has good info about taking the differentials apart.

Good read, and thanks for the link. I've just skimmed it, but it looks like he just swapped flanges and covers. I was talking about swapping say a 2.88 or 3.07 ring and pinion onto the posi carrier from the 2.47 and putting that back into the housing. Just as a cursory glance, it looks like it can be done though. I'm intrigued enough that I'll have to keep my eyes open for a posi diff.
