Change Fuel Filter? Use Biocide?
Hi,
I have an 83 Diesel 300D. I don't drive it that far, that much. Want to keep it up. Should I change the fuel filter when it looks black?...or change in terms of miles. Also, just another question....should I use a "diesel fuel Biocide" every so often to keep the tank clean? I had bought BioKleen by Power Service in the past, now I lost my job, and wondering if it's important to get this.... Thanks Lindajane |
I want to say the interval is 10k miles for fuel filters, but it also hinges on whether you need new ones or not. If you get clogged before that, obviously you're going to have to change them. Keep and eye on the prefilter, and if it's looks like a majority of the filter inside is getting gummed up, I'd change the filters. Generally I look at mine everytime I change the oil.

Hey Linda,
If the little plastic filter turns black, its probably bugs unless you are using biodiesel. When it goes black, best add the biocide, run the car to get it through the system, sat 100 miles of normal use & then change both filters. If this happens regularly, change your fuel supplier, that is how the bugs get there in the first place. |
I add one oz of Startron (and 2 oz two cycle oil for lubrication) every tankful. I began two years ago when I had black deposits on the filter. No problems since. I change the filters when they start to get blocked. Haven't changed any since I started the treatment plan.

Use a biocide that also has an Enzyme. The Enzyme eats up the dead bodies so the will tend not to plug up your Fulters.
There should be more than a few threads on the above. Buying stuff to kill off what is in the Tank may be expensive right now but a plugged filter can stop your Car in the very worst place. And, changing Filters can also be expensive. |
