1996 E300D won’t start

I have a 1996 E300D with 221,000 miles. I recently had radiator, key interlock system, and gear shifter replaced. A week after getting it back from mechanic, car wouldn’t start. Very slow crank and seemed like battery. I took battery off, had it tested, and found out battery was bad. I put a new battery on and same issue. I then took starter off, had it tested, and it too was bad. Replaced starter and now a quicker spin but still not “firing” to start. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Air, Fuel, Compression. What's missing? That's the magic question. What the condition of the fuel filters? Air is usually a given, but check the air filter. Compression? Well you've replaced the battery and starter. What's the condition of the glow plugs? What climate are you in?

Replaced fuel filter a week ago. I live in Louisiana. I replaced glow plugs a little more than a year ago.

If your injection pump has a stop lever, make sure it is in the run position. Crack an injector line at pump or injector and crank to see if you have fuel delivery.

Possible K40 relay failure? If you do a search, you will find a number of posts relating to non starting issues where the K40 relay might be the cause. Good luck!!

Air in the fuel lines will cause a no start. 606 engine is known for overly complicated fuel line arrangement. Tons of little plastic segments and O rings. Was the car sitting for any length of time before the no-start? If so, was it facing uphill?

Car has been sitting for a month. Only time on incline was when changing starter which was no more than 8 hrs.

I had asked about the K40 relay before but was told that if car cranks then K40 couldn't be problem. Is this not true?

I will try the injector pump/injector line. I took fuel filter off and pumped "gas" pedal and had fuel flowing.

If your '96 has the key like my '97, there is a chip in it that can go bad, causing the car to not start. Try a different key. Since you mentioned that the key Interlock was repaired, I would be suspicious of this repair.

My '96 doesn't have that chip, but I don't know exactly when it was introduced.

Turn key to pos 2 with hood up and drivers window down. Listen for the "Click" of the Shut off valve openning on the side of the IP.

No click, no start.

AFAIK, electronic key was introduced w/97 model. All 1996 cars should have a purely mechanical key starter switch. Burned contacts or other damage in this switch will cause failure to crank.

I truly appreciate all the help and suggestions. Sorry I have not answered in a while. I had a small fire in the home that we have been dealing with.

I do hear the "click" when in the #2 position.

I have not because it is under my carport and was trying to avoid having it towed to a mechanic again.

would be cheaper to just buy your own code reader. obd2 readers are inexpensive, and darn near impossible to troubleshoot a 1996+ car without one.
