Exhaust just fell off
So while sitting at a stop light, in my '85 TD, I hear a thunk and the exhaust gets loud. Light turns green and I can hear part of the exhaust dragging the street.
I know exhaust basics, but that's it. It broke at the "joint" next to the transmission. I had to pull over and yank the 4 rubber thingys that hold the entire exhaust on.. then threw the ass'y in the car to get home, it barley fit. So what is that joint called? What size do I need? Can I even weld that stuff with my little mig welder, with it possibly being SS? The rest of the exhaust seems like it's in ok shape. That turbo pipe might be rusty, it was dark out. PS. I don't know how anyone runs a 617 w/o a muffler. This thing is way too loud for me. But it did accelerate faster.

Your MIG can weld it up no problem.
If it is SS then no, you cannot weld it, but I doubt it is because it probably wouldn't have failed. SS requires TIG or stick.

My bro's exhaust is just about done on his 300D, it has been ghetto repaired twice and a few weeks ago another piece fell off.
I'm fixing it real-deal, its getting a brand new center section and MB rear muffler on Saturday, full stock system, a thing of beauty!! It wasn't easy finding the rear pot, just about everywhere is out of stock....I managed to find a genuine MB one for a pretty good price. ![]() Personally I run a straight pipe.....

I doubt my ability to cut pieces of pipe and weld anything remotely decent. I can handle fixing a joint. Plus it's really loud the way it is now. I know moving the tailpipe to the rear would get the noise away from me but.. I still dunno.
So I should buy the pipe from the turbo? Down pipe is it?

My muffler fell off about a year ago, I just went to a small local muffler shop and they fabricated one up for me. About a hundred bucks and it does the job just fine.

Looks like that pipe from the turbo is called a "front pipe" and the price is not listed. I wonder how many millions it is. I know I can buy a flex joint pretty cheap, perhaps I can duplicate that front pipe.
I guess it would be pretty easy to make a new pipe exit mid ship... like in front of the rear wheel. I know someone one here has a pic of an SD with the pipe sticking out of the hood . I don't think I would be caught dead driving anything like that.Perhaps a trip to the muffler shop is the best idea, considering the weather and all.

When I got my 300D in 2005, I got a complete exhaust system from World PAC for a little over $300. Might want to look into that before you nickel and dime yourself to death.

This is true. Go ahead and weld it up.
Quote:
You can absolutely mig Stainless steel. I have attached stainless exhaust components to mild steel for years using a MIG. Optimally, you need to use TIG, but in this case MIG is a perfect solution IF you have stainless. (obviously if it is all mild steel, then MIG is the perfect solution) I might also suggest that if you have a MIG machine, go ahead and weld in a section of pipe if that is what it needs. Dont doubt your ability, remember your were born with feet and at some point couldnt walk. ![]() I plan to straight pipe one of my Benzs.

Mine fell off going down I-55 while a 98, or newer, Turbo Diesel was passing me and we were waving at eachother, i hurd a thud and then scrapping noises... I was 150 Miles away from Chicago/home. Luckly a state troop came by and helped me tie my exhaust up to drive home... It just had the entire exhaust replaced 3 days before hand. except they didn't replace the down pipe right next to the trans and that's where it broke. so another 150$ and for 650, have a walker system.

I finally looked at it a little today. The flange/joint broke on the down pipe side, the rest of the exhaust is good.
I have three options, in my opinion: 1. Buy a new down pipe ($$$)2. Try to rig/weld a new flange to the old down pipe (cheap)3. Steal the good down pipe off my SD (makes SD loud and unsellable)I guess a fourth option is to weld the two pieces together and just omit the flange/joint altogether. I don't like that idea since it may cause stress fractures(kinda doubt it with the flex joint aft of turbo) and it would make transmission removal a problem. Transmission is acting a little funny, so it's on my mind.

Ashedd, those rotten old pipes are almost impossible to repair. repair it and 6 weeks from now it will fall off. This fall there was a 300D Turbo at the pick and pull on/off I70 on the east side of town. Got to be one or two by now on the west side also. Down pipe in $123.00 new as I see it one the internet. Fast Lane is NIS, but is about $143.00. But I sure would try to pull one off a car at the P & P. P & P will probably charge you $15.00
