Fuel delivery issue with primer pump

Has anyone had a new primer pump go bad within a 1 month time span?
winmutt and I tried very hard to resolve a no-start issue last night. Finally had to throw in the towel when darkness prevailed. All fuel hoses correctly connected. Full tank of fuel. When pumping the primer, air bubbles kept coming from the lift pump. Even when trying to draw from a plastic cup, nothing. The pre-filter wouldn't even fill up. We determined that it was a fuel issue, though. The afternoon wasn't a total failure.
I also got to meet a fellow Benz traveler. Thanks again, winmutt.
He may chime in here.

The primer pump relies on the same valves as the primary fuel pump. You could have a malfunctioning suction or discharge valve.

The odd thing is that when I installed the primer pump two to three weeks ago, I pushed it once and it immediately filled the pre-filter and, I assume, the lift pump with fuel. The fuel, unfortunately, was full of crud, so I bought another pre-filter as a replacement. When I swapped them out a couple of days ago, pushing the primer pump would not even fill up the pre-filter. Why would it hold prime for two to three weeks and then, all of a sudden, not?

As previousl stated it could be one of the Valves in the Lift Pump not seating.

However, one of our members bought a New Style Bosch Hand Primer and it leaked. He went to the place where he bought it and exchanged it for anoter and that on also leaked.
He figured they had go a bad lot of Hand Primers so he went to another branch of the same Auto Part store and got another one that and that one was OK.

When that new style primer leaked, was it visibly evident? I could not see any evidence of fuel spillage around my primer.

I was giving an example that even new parts can sometimes be no good.
