Aftermarket Rear View Mirror, anyone attempt this?
This is a long term wish list item but I was wondering if anyone has installed an aftermarket mirror with temperature, compass, and maybe backup cam? Here's an example-
http://www.amazon.com/VS2-Monitor-Sensors-Compass-Thermometer/dp/B000KXT8CS I've always wanted an outside temp/compass... was thinking of putting one of these in someday.

Someone was working on this a while back but I'm unsure if he was successful as I don't recall any posts of the completed project. However, do a search as it may have been just my oversight. I tried a quick search but wasn't able to dig it up.

Does a "Monitor" count as a Television?
I'd LOOK into my state's laws (AND any surrounding state's likely to be visited)
Some Jurisdictions will "Burn" you far anything that looks like a T.V. forward of the Rear Seat.(AND with good reasoning.) ALSO some Jurisdictions frown, statute wise, on on anything other than a rear view mirror in that location. I believe it was His Mogness ,who was retrofitting more complex inside rear view mirrors into his Chassis.(BUT they were all MB mirrors.)

The monitor he was mentioning is a back-up monitor. You have to be in reverse gear to enable it and has a small rear mounted camera.

I wasn't able to find it either, several threads about removing the mirror. Wow, surprised that you're supposed to yank it out! I think the way the original mirror is mounted might make it much more difficult to put in an aftermarket one with temp gauge etc.

The original mirror does push out, and there are mounts with through-holes for wiring for the 124.
However, they are rare to nonexistent in the USA. Some have used a modified W140 mount. An easier method, although I prefer the original mount, would be to use a windshield mount like the one you have pictured, and just trim over the original location with something that looks like it belongs. I designed the 124 et al mounts for the through wiring, so it was a simple matter for me to use prototypes and pilot-build parts for my cars. most are not so lucky. The ignition-switched wires can be picked up from the overhead switches, where the original EC mirror got its power. If you are so lucky to find an original 124 electrochromic mirror, you will find that it has a 22mm ball/socket like BMW mirrors, the non-electrochromic mirrors IIRC all have a smaller 19mm ball.

Excellent info guys! Well there are a few features the W124 has that i'd like... I believe they have a thermometer stock in the cluster right?
Well this project seems doable. I've added it to my list, however there are still many more important things above it!
