Driveshaft refresh visuals
I had some knocking sounds coming from under the car, first while turning to start to climb this one particular hill, then more aggressively at the top of a different hill after letting off the pedal. Limped home, ruled out the front end, looked at the driveshaft and there we have it. Centering bearing support completely detached, split joint nut boot split in half.
Time for the driveshaft refresh! Once I got the thing out of the car a few things became clear. I should've left the center support in place, pried harder on the flex disc and focused more on compressing the driveshaft, instead of disconnecting as much as possible and try to coax the thing out. Also, I had no problem using a pipe wrench on the split joint nut after I dropped the back half of the exhaust, which, btw, the P.O. had welded a straight pipe, instead of a rear muffler, to the body... and out came the hacksaw! It needs to be replaced. Center bearing was shot and the centering bushings which both chipped/cracked so I replaced them, did the flex discs, and threw in that tranny mount that's been kicking around. The U-joint was stiff and is definitely wearing in one spot but I don't have the resources to do anything about it right now. The centering bushings were a pain to get out... not my best work. Anyways, here's a few visuals of the project. Enjoy! ~b
