Hi LEEBRYANT and welcome to the forum.

Can you tell us the age of your sprinter or which engine is in it?

You would set an OM603 engine for example to an artificial mark after TDC... but an OM617 to a "true" mark before TDC...

(I'll PM a moderator to ask them to move this to the diesel forum where you'll get more help)

1997 - R reg? Ah ha you're in the UK then. You'll find that most people here are in the states so saying R reg won't help!

Anyway all I can find from a quick search is that you have a 2.3 litre engine... which makes me think you've probably got an OM604 engine... which is related to the OM606 according to wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM604_engine

Is it a four cylinder diesel engine?

Sorry LEE I've got to bugger off - work out which engine you've got and then do a search such as

OM604 timing site:peachparts.com

in google and you'll get loads of hits. (Or use the google search function in this window - don't bother with the forum search though - waste of time in my opinion!)

If you can't get the answer you want I'm sure someone else will chip in and help from the diesel discussion. I'm going to bed!
