1979 300D Throttle Linkage
Hi, i searched like crazy and cant find any pics posted of the type of throttle linkage in my California '79 300D. It does not have the bar on the right side of the engine coming through the firewall, instead it comes from the IP over the valve cover gasket to the left side of the engine and down. anyone have pictures of adjusting this type? Also, one of the linkage pieces (the one on top of the engine) has no screw to tighten. It has built in play, hard to describe, kind of like he top of a clicker pen without a spring in it. hope someone can make sens of what im trying to convey....
help.

Did they have a separate California model in '79? If not, I can post some photos from my '79 non turbo.

I believe you may be mistaking the portion of the linkage that goes over to the transmission in place of the bowden cable with the linkage that comes from the accelerator pedal??

basically i am trying to adjust it because i have NO power in 1st gear. i did the deisel purge, and didnt help at all... other than starting to take apart the IP, i wanted to adjust the linkage so that i ensure i have full throttle, but all the posts talk about the rod that comes out of the firewall on the right side, and i dont have that setup.

Just to be clear, right and left are typically used from the standpoint of a person sitting in the driver's seat. There should be linkage going from the accelerator to the left hand side of the valve cover, coming thru the firewall and connecting to the whole complex of linkage pieces in the vicinity of the stop lever.

Also, I believe a 79 does not start in 1st gear without either depressing the accelerator to the floor and activating the kickdown switch or manually moving the shifter into L. Under normal conditions it starts in 2nd (I think)

its like i floor the pedal, kickdown, nothing happens for 4 seconds, then theres the typical jolt, and the car starts moving. i have an 81 non-turbo, and its waaaayyyy peppier than that. im guessing my throttle linkage is way loose. as for right and left...sorry. from the drivers seat perspective - the rod that comes out of the firewall on the left side does not exist in this car. i believe it is more like the 240d's

Do you own 6 MB's...?
Do you own any manuals for them ? There are very specific instructions for the order and amount of play each section of the linkage should have.. which may not be available on a forum... and it can be dangerous if you get it messed up... like sticking open.... You at LEAST need to post pictures of the system you have.. as they made lots of changes to them over the years..

What connects the linkage on the IP with the accelerator pedal?

Oh I forgot to ask have you got access to chapter 30-300 in the FSM?
It is mind boggling to start off with but once you've identified your IP pump all becomes clear!

Bugger - sorry - I'm guilty again of not reading threads properly.
I spent a bit of time in the boring winter months trying to compile information on these pesky throttle linkages as they cause so much confusion. The weather got good so I didn't finish it - something for next year. I don't remember seeing one without that rod...

I don't either, that's why I asked what connects the pedal to the linkage. All I've ever seen are those rod mechanisms. A picture of the different system would be helpful.

If your car has very low power in first gear, could you tell us how much or how normal is the power going through gears 2,3 and 4. Don't ever mess with that IP. It is a short but fast way to the junkyard.
