Window seal, whistles when driving
On my 1980 300D, the drivers side window whistles when going over 55mph. I know it is the window, if I roll it down a little the noise goes away. What is the best way to fix this?

Are you sure it's not the door seal. When you roll up or down the window you change the dynamics of the air flow. To be sure push on the door itself while driving with the window up and see if the sounds changes.

Could be the door seal, the door seal is fairly new, not installed by me though. I did not notice a change in the noise by pushing or pulling on the door. Thanks

My 87 does exactly this too. Puzzling. The door seal looks good.
Driver's window only. Touch it down just a smidgen and the noise is a lot less.

Maybe a symptom of a door striker needing adjusted?

Mine does this too - on the passenger side. I assumed it was the door seal but I'd be interested to hear the verdict...

...interesting point, yes, my driver's door sometimes takes two slams to shut. Something is probably out of alignment but nothing looks out of alignment - wouldn't know which way to adjust what.

When I've seen THAT symptom before (non-benzes) its been the hinges most of the time. Easy to tell, open the door and try lifting the car with it by hand....if you can feel a thunk when you lift and release it (however small)...you have worn hinges...if you don't look elsewhere on alignment. You will feel it at the point you take the weight off the door. You likely won't see or hear it, but feel it unless its really, really bad. Maybe in your case years of dirt and dust combined with oil to form a thick crud thats binding up the latch assembly?

My 1982 240d was doing this too. The whistle was coming from the driver's door, specifically it was coming from the front upper corner of the window frame. It would do it occasionally in crosswinds with the old door seal, and the new one did it constantly. If I pushed out on that corner while driving, it would change and sometimes stop. The more I fiddled with it (pushed it), the worse it got. If I had my roof rack on, it was unbearable. I thought about selling the car. Finally I had the bright idea to roll down the window, open the door and pull on that corner while holding the door open. It's gone. Completely gone.

Open the door and use a piece of wood, close the door against it and push on the corner of the area where the whistle is. this will slightly tweek the window frame (with window lowered) I have seen body shops use this technic.
I had trouble with the 85 door shutting and would have to slam it to get it to latch. adjusted the striker, even changed out the latch assy. gave it a good squirt of WD-40. It wasn`t until I was at a shop, and the guy used a small brush and some grease. slathered it in the latch real good, and has worked fine. I use an Acid brush and hit all the cars now and then, and all the doors work good. The big problem Iam having with these new seals (E-Bay) is they leak water. go through a car wash and it is like having the window down. replaced both front door seals on the 85. Charlie

No, I didn`t figure the on the door needing an alignment just to replace the seal. buying them off E-Bay at a good price, probably some cheap Chinese knockoffs. some times a seemingly good deal isn`t always so.
They don`t leak when it is raining, just if I wash the car, I`ll see a little water on the inside of the glass. the real treat is going through a car wash. need my wet suit and snorkle. I`ll give Phill a call when I ready to do the 240 and replace these on the 300. maybe he can get the good German seals. Charlie
