Possible? I think so. Advisable? Not so much. I usually fill up when I get down to about a quarter tank indicated. This is generally a bit over 400 miles for me. Assuming 30 mpg, which is doable with a light foot under the right conditions, you would have to burn 20 of your nominal 21 gallons. This is cutting it closer than I like, especially since most people get less than 30 mpg most of the time.

There are people on here who will probably say that's impossible, but I think it is, provided he drives like somebody's grandfather. I have broken 30 mpg before, but that is with my manual conversion. I picked up about 3 mpg overall with the swap.

POSSIBLE? yes. with an automatic, with average driving highway conditions... not likely.
my 83TD wagon has about a 16gallon tank...
my 82SD has the 21ish gallon tank, and I'd not recommend over 500miles on that much more aerodynamic vehicle...

I'm cheating a little but I drove 1350.8 miles on 12 gallons of diesel a couple years ago! Logged me 112mpg! The best I had was 173mpg. I'm actually about to pull the veg system so this will be the first time I really get to see what kind of mileage the 240D gets.

My 82 wagon never got more than 360 miles to a tank. I was getting 26mpg, only pushed the tank real low a handful of times.

I could never do better than 26.3mpg when driving the 5 freeway stretch between LA and SFO numerous times in an 82 300TD. The tank was filled to the brim angled down and burped and the mileage was verified by the GPS. The maximum speed was 65-68mph while on cruise control.

In my 83 240d with the 300d euro motor, 307 diff and five speed overdrive tranny I can get 35 with ease. With the 23 gallon turbodiesel tank I can exceed 750 miles on a tank with no sweat.

My 84 300D with untouched ALDA (boost management) and deleted EGR has never had over 29.6mpg. I average around 26mpg with a fair amount of parking lot highway traffic.

I think the most I ever got out of a tank was about 475 miles and that was when I was wide-eyed and worried that I wouldn't find a gas station in while driving in the middle of nowhere. I usually fill up around 425 miles.

My best was on a relatively flat day of steady driving on a highway trip in my 1979 300sd: 30.5 mpg (but those were Imperial gallons).

I don't think I ever got within 4 mpg of that again.

My current '85 300d seems to give me just a hair under 27 most of the time, in a mix of urban and secondary-highway use.

I put my money on him using a smart phone and hitting the period button instead of the space button.
