auto transmission install question

1983 300 cd, 617 diesel. Engine and transmission out of car.

I was bolting the transmission to the engine and snugged up the transmission bolts. I tried to rotate the torque converter and it would not move. Looking from the bottom I noticed the flywheel had a slots in it for the torque converter bolt flanges. Those have to be aligned before putting them together, and I did not do that first.

Question: Snugging the bolts with it out of alignment may have forced the torque converter backwards a little, correct? Do you think I damaged anything?

I corrected it and it bolted together now. No fluid is leaking from converter seal and it spins fine.

You are meant to push the torque converter in towards the transmission when mating the transmission to the engine.

Good advice here on the forum says to rotate the torque converter at this point to make sure it is nicely engaged.

Bolt the two casings together (the transmission and engine) and then pull the torque converter forwards so that the driven plate touches the torque converter mating surface. There shouldn't be any clearance.

The tangs / tabs on the torque converter

Fit into the primary pump on the front of the transmission

Oh crap you've probably got a 722.3 transmission on an '83 - same advice though the tangs on the 722.3 are a bit beefier and I think the front pump design is different (I haven't taken mine to bits yet!)

torque converter was in pump ok. I had problem bolting the flywheel and converter together. The flywheel has a slot for the converter bolt flanges to match up. I did not realize till I snugged it up.
