On my 85 300D I removed the front bumper right side rubber end cap so I could re-attach the rubber bumper strip which was coming loose. To get the end cap off, I pushed it back off of its bracket. To get it back on, it looks like I could struggle and push it back on with maybe some Vaseline, but I am wondering if it would be better to remove the sheet metal bracket, put the end cap on the bracket and then attach the bracket back onto the car. The only thing that is keeping me from jumping into this is that the bracket attaches with one bolt and nut, and also one fastener that looks like a plastic piece that goes through the fender. It is coated with tarry stuff on the back side so I cannot tell what the back of the fastener looks like. I suspect that I might break it if I try to remove it. Is this the way the bracket came from the factory or did someone use some other kind of fastener at some point?

Thanks for posting this PDF. I think I get it. I gather that the rubber was not intended to be removed from the bracket, but rather the bracket is supposed to be removed from the fender with the rubber intact. I am going to scrape the tar from the back of the remaining pin holding the bracket to the fender and just pull the bracket forward away from the fender as the text says.

I am not sure what removing the fender is all about, as that does not seem necessary for what I am doing. Maybe that is referring to a bigger disassembly procedure. I know it is always tempting to get carried away and do a full blown frame-off complete restoration but this time I am going to keep it simple and just get the bumper strip back tight and the end cap back on.
