The NEVER Diesel list

NEVER:

* Overheat your engine.

* Never drive with active dripping/flowing/leaking engine oil cooler hoses.

* Never allow WATER in the fuel tank.

* Never put alcohol in the fuel tank.

What can you add to the list?

Never underestimate how long a given job will take you. It's usually longer than you think.

Generally I think you could state that one should NEVER get in a rush when maintaining your car.

This is especially true with OM606 glow plugs.

Roy,

Are you talking about HEET for water-dispersal for diesel engines here? I've been using HEET in the red plastic bottles for a couple years now in my Ford PSD 7.3 fuel tank, because the 55-gal. tank is steel.

This is bad for the injection pump and engine.

Power Service for water-dispersal, instead?

How about never using ether starting fluid to compensate for lame compression bad glow plugs or other non-starting issues?

I've been driving with active dripping of fuel, oil and coolant. I check the levels before I go anywhere. Usually alright. And I've been putting iso-HEET in for a while. Not a good idea?

A friend of ours did that to our diesel Rabbit many years ago. He managed to get out onto the highway with it before it quit.

He had it towed back to my place, and I drained the tank, the lines, the filter and the pump, filled it back up with diesel and it started right up and ran fine after that... what a PITA, though!

Unfortunately, sometimes the fuel delivery person dumps gas in the diesel tank. According to the Bosh rebuilder, gas took out the reman injection pump on my Diesel Ram. Of course, there is no way to prove it or get reimbursed for 2 $1,000 pumps (original & 1st reman), 8 hrs install time or 25 gallons of fuel thrown away. At least the SD pump isn't as finiky as the VP.

Never drive away with the block heater cord still plugged in.

Never wear nice clothing and think you can get away with adjusting, checking, or fixing something on a diesel without getting a black oil spot on you somewhere.

Never try to pass someone on a grade on a two-lane road in a non-turbocharged diesel.

Never drive without an intact and properly maintained Mercedes hood star.

Probably better to say never try to pass anyone while driving a non-turbocharged diesel.
