Unfortunately, sometimes the fuel delivery person dumps gas in the diesel tank. According to the Bosh rebuilder, gas took out the reman injection pump on my Diesel Ram. Of course, there is no way to prove it or get reimbursed for 2 $1,000 pumps (original & 1st reman), 8 hrs install time or 25 gallons of fuel thrown away. At least the SD pump isn't as finiky as the VP.

Since most of these apply to gas as well as diesel engines;

Never NEVER pour cold water into a hot engine.

Never use non-approved coolant (diesel for diesel, HOAT for Mercedes)

Never put any part of you that you don't want to lose under a jacked car

Never ask your wife's permission to buy parts you don't need

At the point in time where the connection is made at the battery terminals, all of these bad things can occur and damage or destroy anything that is connected to the system.
A battery alone is usually not damaged by all of these things, but semiconductors and discrete components can easily be .

Please explain where I err.
I wouldn't call any charger based on a transformer a good charger... good ones in my mind are the electronic ones with current and at least two or three stage voltage control... that generally cost at least $250 for a 20 amp charger. But, I come from the solar industry, where we can't disconnect the battery while it's being charged, because that would take out power to someone's house... so we use charges that don't fry anything sensitive also connected to the battery.

Always maintain that your Mercedes' are economy cars, especially since many of them are over a decade or two in age - and that you can spend more on them on average, because the amount is made up for in fuel savings, and not driving a newer, most costly car.

This can work too when at the Harley-Davidson store, by calling her and stating that the salesman said I can double the mileage per mile driven by buying a Harley. So buying one saves gas money.

Eventually, you will get to the point to where you are saving so much money, you can't afford to save any more than you are already are.

Never buy a diesel and think it will run forever without maintenance and a lot of attention

Never believe a car ad that says:"Diesel engine with $320K miles and 300k+ to go. Engine just broken in and will run forever.....it will even run on Pee!"

Other non-diesel related:
Never use wheel bolts other than the correct "ball seated" ones

Never open the hood "half way" and NOT expect to bang your head on the grill.

It always takes three time longer than you tell your wife it will take to fix something.....it's true!

It will always cost three time more than you estimate it will cost, but you won't tell your wife that.

If you see a few rust bubble, expect a big hole under the paint as you dig away..... and 10 other areas of rust you didn't expect.

Lastly, NEVER ask a question on the forum unless you at least TRY to use the search function (sorry-off topic )

Never mess with the timing, IE, don't take off the top timing chain gear and rotate it to correct for the timing marks being off... For other newbies here, this engine is an interference engine and doing so will result in at least a broken cam, rocker towers, etc depending on what you do right after the first step (like hit the key)..

Ha, a costly lesson. I'm not so naive at this point.

My two cents? If you have an automatic climate control (from any year), never assume it will work 100% right for you. I've had to replace a ton of stuff on mine and I just found I have to replace something else! As luck would have it, I'll get everything fixed and multiple vacuum diaphragms will decide to poop the bed.

A few more "nevers:"

This is a BIG never: Never compress suspension springs with anything other than the proper spring compressor tool.

Never start the car with the instrument cluster removed..."I hear that" the line to the oil pressure gauge can make an awful mess!

Never re-assemble anything without first cleaning and lubricating (in a few cases, locktite may be an appropriate substitute for lubricant...e.g. brake caliper bolts, etc.)

Never remove the cam without first removing the spacer between the timing sprocket and the first cam tower....again "I hear that" the spacer can drop down into the timing chain compartment!

Never have a shop install wheel lug bolts, unless you confirm that you can actually remove them by hand with a lug wrench before you leave the shop (in my experience, shop-installed lug bolts will invariably be WAY, WAY TOO TIGHT!!!)

Happy Holidays,

Mark

Never use the crevice between the front dress panel and the radiator as a tool storage tray and x2 if you plan to start the engine while working.

And certainly not if, like me, you then lean on the end of a screwdriver, flipping it over and into the fan, whereupon it comes flying back out (business end first, of course) about a half inch from your right eye.

Never drive away with the block heater cord still plugged in.

Never wear nice clothing and think you can get away with adjusting, checking, or fixing something on a diesel without getting a black oil spot on you somewhere.

Never try to pass someone on a grade on a two-lane road in a non-turbocharged diesel.

Never drive without an intact and properly maintained Mercedes hood star.
