Cam Chain Guide Rail Pins

I am in the process of removing the head on my Mercedes 99 E300 TD. I have subscribed to ALLDATADYI.com and have read several threads here. So far I cannot find the answer to... Where are the cam chain guide rail pins.

All the threads I've read here, including ALLDATA, do not show the same engine I have. They ALL show the four or five cylinder; mine is the straight 6. It is very similar but not quite the same.

I have the cams out and I am ready to remove the head bolts; but first I need to find the lower right guide pin. I've removed the top right pin and the lower camshaft housing. I removed the vacuum pump (no pin in there.)

I am wondering if the head will come off with the guide rail intact. The lower pins are somewhere in the cylinder block, not anywhere in the head.

I will get some photos up soon. In the meantime, if anyone knows the answer to these questions I would greatly appreacite it!

Both pins are recessed, the lower one is there but just difficult to see.

Both need to come out as the plastic chain guide needs to stay in situ as you pull the head, if your still stuck will try and take a photo tomorrow.

Thanks so much, David! I am still stuck and will remain so until I know where the little devil is! If I could see if I could pull it; I made a great little puller for the upper one; it worked great!

Give me a few minutes and I will post some photos of the front side of the engine.

Paul

or some reason it's putting the photo of the front of the head upside down.

Are you saying the pin is in the whole above the vacuum pump?

Pretty sure it is Paul, try screwing a bolt in there using the on removed for thread/pitch size.

From the above thread, courtesy ah kay:

"The second pin is recessed. Located just above the vacuum pump. Do NOT butcher up the thread. You cannot punch it out like the top pin. Use some brake cleaner to clean the thread well. Use the washer and bolt extraction method again. Hope it helps."

The upper pin was not threaded on the outside, it is smooth. So, I made a little puller and it slowly came out. (I did use some spray liquid wrench.)

Isn't the lower pin smooth on the outside also?

I sprayed some liquid wrench on it; I'll let it set overnight and try using the same puller method as I did on the top one; assuming it is smooth; held in by tightness.

They are very similar if not the same, both are threaded internally to allow the use of pullers.

I used a piece of studding with large washers sitting on top of a socket.

(similar idea with bolt, not mine)

There's also a set sequence by MB service manual, as the dowels/pins may hold two components in alignment, cam housing being one.
