Nice one Bob - keep on ironing out those bumps - you'll have a peach in the end.

Ohh ... now you are punningshing me.

On a positive, my cost went down too. Found $.87 under the back seat.

Now being a good citizen I'm sure you'll hand that into the local police station and wait until it has been claimed.

Actually no. As it was inside the vehicle I legally bought, I consider it chattel.

Nice to see some folks have good experiences like this. I've been eyeing CL adds for some time as well hoping for something similar but the ones I've checked out so far have all been wrecks.

When I am on the hunt I use crazedlist.org : search craigslist like a madman which allows searching many CL's at the same time.

Im also ready to pull the trigger when I start looking and if I like what I read/see I immediately call. Ive saved two by immediately sending a deposit thru paypal to the seller.

I will confess also it takes patience. The other MB I helped save was for a buddy who had driven about 1500 miles looking at POS's that were advertized as 'show room' condition.

Too true Peter - I'm in awe of Bob's luck on this one. I've been having trouble getting parts here - same old story you travel for miles only to find fields of rust or barns of rust...

...now I need to tell myself - well it's a day out and perhaps I'll get the bit I want but probably not!

The deeper I get into my new Benz the more poor or non existent upkeep that has been done.

The exhaust needed all 4 doughnuts.

Tranny fluid was last changed before power mowers were brought to market. Glad I got two filter kits. The new fluid will be changed about the 2k mark.

Ya dont want to know what the power steering filter looked like... grrrr.

At least the motor oil was up to level and actually didnt look too bad.

Wont say the alternator belts were loose only that it took about 6 1/2 turns to
get it to a proper tension.

The instrument cluster has been out several times. If it was screwed in I doubt more than 1 screw would have still been in use.

The trip meter lever reset was fun. I ended up screwing the the white shaft onto the return spring. Once I did that, reassembly was a breeze. I will be doing a full bulb replacement with LED lights. Im finding that 194 bulbs seem to be far less expensive than any of the other direct plug-ins. That will replace the 3 larger bulbs in there now.

The only hassle with the LED bulbs is they are polarity sensitive unlike the old incandescents. Went thru the bulb connectors and cleaned up all the old phenolic board connectors. A bit of extra effort went into the ground connection and the extra connections on the speedometer.

Looks like for the smaller ones a #74 with an LED will be used. My gauge cluster has 8 of those.

Even got an early birthday present of a pair of Rhino ramps. Those will sure make life much easier as time goes on.

Ya just gotta love yard sales. These were not the ~$50ish thats usually out there.

More and more fun. Pulled the CCU cover and the unit. Both have been out several times. At least they didnt mess the wood face up and its not even too bad underneath.

The radio ceased working due to a broken fuse holder. Clip lead confirmed the radio at least comes on. No antenna working yet.

Pulled the CCU and swapped it with another but still unknown unit. Nothing. Board looked very good on the original so I popped it back in.

My dash light rheostat is funky even after cleaning. I think its gonna get jumped. By rapidly rotating it I got the CCU lights to finally fire up, still no dash lights.

All new fuses with brass brushed fuse contacts in the fuse box. Is there a relay that feeds power to the dash and the CCU ? If so, where is it ?

One intermittent issue has reared its head too. With no pattern, occasionally at startup when going into drive directly or after backing up, I get nothing forward.

Ive tested it by waiting for over a minute. Popping the tranny into first instantly solves the problem but that isnt the answer I know.

She shifts quite well thru all gears up and down while on the road. Friends have commented how very smooth she shifts.

Fluid including the torque converter drained while the filter was being changed for the first time in a very long time. Level has remained great.

Any suggestions ?
