I guess it's the latest trend. OK, so I guess I DON'T want to be back in Texas.

No rule like that in NJ. They do quote NADA when sending a letter to demand more sales tax money. Giving proof of purchase price and condition stops them. In the NADA how to use this book section it advises to deduct for reconditioning.

There's a reason the great state of Rhode Island (officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations) is referred to as Louisiana north, no offense to anyone from Louisiana.

I lived there for 1 year, 6 months and 1 day. I've never been any happier than the day I moved. I still apologize to my youngest every time she mentions that she was born there.

It is difficult for me to believe there is a more corrupt state in the union.

Texas said they were losing too much revenue due to people falsely stating sales prices. Too many $ 500 Mercedes being sold down here I guess...

Combating fraud is one thing...I agree with that. But not respecting market prices is another thing....that's what frustrates me.

I agree. Lots of unhappy people down here when it passed. One would think that a notarized Bill of Sale with a copy of the payment instrument(Cashier's Check, Bank Draft, etc.) would be an option available to avoid it but they offer -zero- options. You pay based on NADA, end of story. Total BS!

Almost? Glad I haven't left. Yes, they do the NADA thing for modern cars, but for classics, they still just go by whatever you write down. At least they did for my 1985 190E AMG and my 1969 Porsche 911S, and both of those were March of 2011 and March of 2012, respectively.

It does seem like a list made up by "a"holes. Mayback, all Mercedes, everything Chevrolet Camaro or Impala or anything "Jeep". What a jerk list!

They aren't combating fraud - they are simply collecting all the taxes they can squeeze out of the "legal" residents. The illegal residents will take their benefits and license their Chebby Impala else where.

now in WA they will do the same thing only they have thier own little black book that they will not let you see...
also a workaround is to have a letter from the previous owner stating whats all wrong with the car and what it needs as far as repairs (ie bad engine, bad transmission)...

now what is State of Rhode Island doing as far as parts car sales? same thing?

also on the CPI list that was posted its funny how a landrover discovery is no on the list...lol

Michigan is a bit different, when buying a car the tax is based on whats written on the form, but when registering each year, its based on weight for vehicles 1983 and older, and original sales price for vehicles 1984 onward....which means my registration for my 300SD is about $36 a year, but for the 420 and 300E its around $125-160 each. Very annoying. However, can't complain as its a drop in the bucket of overall ownership costs.

Actually, no. In Texas, at least, it was about combatting fraud. Go back and look at the legislative history.

Isn't OD where you're supposed to post uninformed things like this? I prefer my diesel and politics separate...
