Need some motor mount help today..
So I'm replacing the motor mounts and have pulled the bottom 8 mm and the upper two 6 mm bolts from the mount. I have taken the top two bolts from the engine shock mount and it now is free. When I jack up the engine with a scissors jack the whole car still goes up. I'm jacking on the oil pan and have loosened the other side's 8mm bolt a bit. I'm baffled why the whole chassis is still raised. What am I forgetting?
Do I have to unbolt both sides- I thought I could do one side at a time... Last edited by MTUpower; 04-14-2012 at 04:10 PM. |

The engine and transmission weigh about 800 pounds I think. There is some sag in the springs because of that, so you will need to jack up an inch or two to remove that load before the engine actually lifts up with respect to the chassis.

Are you only replacing one motor mount? As BoiseBenz puts it, you have the weight of the engine compressing the suspension so it'll go up some before the motor mount arm starts lifting from the mount.
I see your edit, you might as well and unbolt both... |

one side should work. I replaced my oil cooler lines by just loosening one side.

Just finished doing my 240D motor mounts today. Jacking up with only one side unbolted worked fine. I couldn't do the left side without disconnecting the engine shock.

The engine was heavier than I remember and it took a bit more twisting on the jack to get it off the ears. Job was uneventful after that. Thanks for the replies.

One mount was collapsed and the other on it's way. My engine bay was making all sorts of creaking noises which I thought might be from other components. New mounts made a big difference. One of the 6mm's was missing on the drivers side so I used a different bolt - same length/same threads but different head.

For future reference, that won't help much. You need to disconnect one end of the shock itself. The lower shaft should have a 7mm wrench flat on it.

If you jack the Engine up far enough the Bell Housing hits the Fire Wall.
Once bottomed out there you will be trying to lift the whole vehicle.
